Robert,

On one of these threads where you were defending your choice to live in the DR you mentioned a Thai restaurant in Santo Domingo. Would you mind telling me where it's located?

Thanks!

Rachel

It's not a Thai, just serves a few Thai dishes. It's on Sarasota, a few doors down from Pepperoni at University Plaza. Sorry, can't recall the name.

On Thursday night Salon De Te (Tel: 540 8080 located on Max Henriquez Urena #20, Naco) has a Thai menu, you need to ring in advance and make a reservation, the seats are limited.

Anyone else

Anyone else with good restaurant suggestions in Santo Domingo? I work in Naco and live in El Portal, I'm looking for anything good and not too expensive between the two. Also, I'm looking for restaurants where I won't feel silly going alone.

Thanks Robert!!

Just a response..

I'm afraid Hillbilly might lambast me for going to dinner with any stranger from the internet.. : )

(j/k Hillbilly)

A good idea! Let me know when you're available to guide me through the wily world of Santo Domingo's cuisine..

Anytime you want...

I don't profess to be an expert, but I'm always available to be taken to dinner :)

Drop me an email, lets see if we can hook up.

I found this interesting... now I have a question...
Is it not a good idea for a woman to go out alone in the evening?
To a restaurant, to a dance club, wherever in DR...

Is it dangerous? Is it considered something akin to brazen? Is it okay? I do not know the mindset of Dominicans. Here to learn, remember!

I don't know the mindset of Dominicans either, I've only been here about 3 weeks. But, I do know that I've been walking around alone at night and in the day, going to restaurants alone, shopping alone and taking taxis and publicos alone and haven't had any problems at all. Some people tell my I'm crazy but I don't carry a lot of cash, I don't wear fancy jewelry or expensive clothes and I speak conversational Spanish. I refuse to live in fear all the time and I've got to get out and see things. So, I don't know if it's taboo but I'm doing it and I haven't had any bad results, yet. Of course, I also stick to the roads I know and try not to be out walking too late at night. (and I'm nearly 6 feet tall, if that puts another spin on things..)

I've been somewhat reluctant to respond.. but

aside from being terribly homesick --

My job is very strange. When I was in the states I worked as a Human Resources Manager, I was always busy and had a million and one things to do.

Here I'm one of three assistants for one person. Some of the things I'm called on to do grate on my nerves. (I went to college so I could bring this guy water and coffee??) but most of the time I just don't have enough to do. I'm hoping to get handed more stuff to do.. I send and receive a lot of faxes. I do some translating into English. That's about it. Also the hours are crazy. I didn't think to ask if we would be working on Saturdays. Most of the surprises are because of my own naivete. However, I'm paid very well (yesterday was my first payday). So, I'm not sure what to say.. there are good days and bad days and days.. I think most of my woes are just corporate culture shock.

Yeah, that 1/2 day on Saturdays is for the birds!

Sounds good if you're getting paid properly and they're not working you to the bone! Usually it's the other way around - most people (there) are made to work like dogs and receive next to nothing for it.

No matter what, it'll still look good on your resum? (and you won't include the waitressing duties!), so you ought to just focus on enjoying the experience as a whole. I think you're very lucky!

Don't get me wrong

I'm pretty much over the shock and have now given up complaining about my job. You may have just seen the last of it. Now that I know how to get around the city and that my job isn't going to wear me out very much I need to focus on learning more about the city and getting into the culture.

Luckily I'm living with a great Dominicana and her grandson and so I'm getting a view of how people live here. Like that whole 'no hot water' thing. That's a real eye opener. It's amazing what we gringas take for granted.

I am very lucky, I was sick of my job in the states and I felt like I was in a rut. I'm learning new things here every day and feel adventurous again. So, even though the job isn't that fulfilling, you're right, I'm lucky to be paid well and not to be worked to death. I can't believe I was complaining about not having enough work to do. I have at least had the time to become a regular poster on DR1. :)

An accomplishment in itself!

We provide this great website, all this info, you get to interact with like minded people etc etc. Now we have to buy the visitors dinner? Is Pica Pollo too much to ask. And I thought you was going to teat me from your first paycheck?

Are you feeling guilty yet?

Just kidding... It's always good to hook up with our posters. Email me, it will be a pleasure to escort you to one of our finer food establishments in the capital.

You should really try to lay off the guilt trips.. why do you think I left my parents in Oregon??

I'll send you an email, we'll work out the detalles. :)

That will be the day!

I have yet to go to a restaurant with a female and shared the bill.

Read: That's by choice.
