Punta Cana to host cruise ship industry conference
Punta Cana will host the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA)’s Platinum Advisor Member Association Cruise (PAMAC) Conference this coming 6-9 June 2018. An estimated 200 executives will come for the event to be held in Punta Cana.

Orfila Salazar, director of cruise ship tourism for the Ministry of Tourism, made the announcement during her participation in the Seatrade Cruise Global Fair held recently at the Broward Convention Center in Florida.
Salazar said the upcoming PAMAC event is an excellent opportunity for the country because cruise ship industry executives will be able to see for themselves the incredible rich tourist experience that the Dominican destinations have to offer cruise ship travelers. She said an agenda is being prepared so that the executives can visit key attractions and installations in La Romana and Santo Domingo.

"Our country benefits because these executives can also express first hand the needs and concerns they have regarding the destination, with the aim of increasing the ship routes to our country," she said.

Salazar said in 2015 the same event was held in Puerto Plata when the Amber Cove port was to be inaugurated. In Punta Cana, the Port of Cap Cana is receiving luxury ships and this is a great opportunity for the shipping executives to get a first hand glance at the destination.

Ministry of Tourism statistics reveal that in 2017, some 533 cruise ships docked at Dominican ports, bringing 1,148,000 cruise ship passengers.

Canadians love retiring to the DR
The Dominican Republic for years has been a popular retirement destination for Canadians looking for warm climate places to spend the winter or live year-long. Among the most popular places in the country are the cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago and the north coast beach communities of Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabrera and Samana. Also Punta Cana in the east, the city of Santiago, and the mountain destinations, Jarabacoa and Constanza.

Joel Santos, president of the Association of Hotels & Tourism (Asonahores), explains that foreigners prefer this country to retire because of the cost of living, the tropical climate and the active social life. These are the findings of a recent study commissioned by Asonahores and the Association Of Housing Builders And Promoters (Asocoprovi) on the potential of the country as a retirement destination.

Among the plusses is the easy access to health services, as well as the culture and hospitable nature of Dominicans, the diversity of the terrain and good infrastructures connecting the entire country.

Santos noted that 17% of the Canadian population living in the country is over 65 years of age. He said there is great potential for the real estate market in the Dominican Republic.

The study also noted the benefits granted by Law 171-07 that grants specific incentives to persons who live on pensions from foreign countries.

According to statistics from the Central Bank, 827,700 Canadian tourists visited the DR in 2017.

More millennials are taking family vacations than their elders
Based on advance travel bookings, AAA Travel’s survey on US travelers says the top five most likely international destinations for families in summer 2018 will be Cancun, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Rome, Italy and Dublin, Ireland.

AAA Travel’s survey says that more millennials are taking family vacations than their elders. The survey found 44 percent of millennials (ages 24-38) were planning a family getaway – more than members of Generation X, at 40 percent, or baby boomers, at 32 percent. Generation X is age group between 39 and 53 years, while boomers are 54 to 72 years old.

Interestingly, more Americans are getting their passports. The survey found that 9% more or 35% of all vacationing families have plans for their vacations compared to 2016.

PGA Tour in Punta Cana
The PGA Tour is set for the Tom Fazio-designed Corales Golf Course in Puntacana Resort and Club from Thursday, 22 March to Sunday, 25 March 2018. This is a first for the Dominican Republic.

“Hosting the very first PGA Tour tournament in the Dominican Republic is an honor both for Puntacana Resort and Club and for the Dominican Republic itself,” said Frank Rainieri, chairman and founder of the Grupo Puntacana, host of the event. “This is an affirmation of the exceptional golf facilities we have down here, and we are thrilled to expose the international golf community to the Dominican Republic.

He explained that the PGA Tour is a step up from the past Web.com Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship that was first held in 2016. “We look forward to another outstanding tournament on the Web.com Tour in May and then to grow our relationship with the PGA TOUR beginning in 2018,” says Rainieri.

The Punta Cana event is part of the PGA Tour’s 49-tournament FedExCup schedule that includes nine tournaments in eight countries outside the United States.
