No significant claims allowed in the first year of the policy. Details will be provided by your insurer.

Sounds like a preexisting condition. Talk to your insurer about preexisting conditions.

Generally, policy payouts are capped. They will pay until you use up your allotment, then you are on your own. Talk to your insurer for specific details about the policy you end up purchasing.

i think it makes no sense to have ambulatory plan within medical insurance. normally the insurance covers 80% of the cost of the medicine, up to a certain amount a year, from 3,000 to around 12,000. exact details will depend on the type of the plan. depending on the medicine 3,000 worth can be just one month supply.

in order to buy meds with insurance you also need a valid prescription so you need to visit a doctor, wasting time and spending money. there is a limit to how much medicine you can buy in one go and certain drugs can only be prescribed by a corresponding specialist. again, depends on the insurer and the plan. plus, of course, certain medicine are not covered at all. i've also seen requirement for pre-authorization.

it's probably best to keep ambulatory part of the plan to minimum to cover the costs of occasional treatments (infection, flue, whatnot) and buy daily medicine with cash. most pharmacies will offer a discount on purchases above certain value or quantity. or, if you are short on money you can buy most medicine per one pill to cover your daily needs.

About insurance covering medication:

DV8 is precisely right about needing a CURRENT, that days date prescription.

So unless your doctor is willing to write you a prescription without paying a doctor's visit fee, it´s still expensive.

Unlike the States, authorizing refills does not work here, for the Insurance to cover the cost.

I take the first one every day. My insurance pays for about 2/3ds of it. BUT I go to Preventis (a primary care provider in front of the Sirena on Bartolomé Colón in Santiago). Universal is my insurer. They are far from the best but I don't pay for it, the university does.. I think, without insurance a 30 day supply of 60mg of Diltiazem is about RD$750, and you get a 10% discount for cash.

With the insurance I pay around RD$250....give or take. If you take a higher dose, obviously, the price goes up a bit.

Cordially,

HB

Hi,

depend on your age, if you suffer from certain pre-conditions and are above are certain age, no Insurance company will accept you.
Do what everybody does. Keep your Pre-condition for yourself and cover the expenses for it from your own pocket and use the insurance for anything else that might come up.
