Going after more Japanese tourists, DR to join League of Historical Cities
Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García was in Japan for conversations with the Mayor of Kyoto Daisaku Kadokawa and officers of the city of Kyoto. He announced new agreements with the board of tourism promotion of Kyoto and ANA, the Japanese airline. The Mayor of Kyoto is also the chairperson of the League of Historical Cities.

During the meeting, it was agreed that the Dominican Republic would share its experience in the management of historical city centers and learn from the Kyoto case. Dominican Republic also agreed to seek to seek membership in the League of Historical Cities. 115 cities from 65 countries are member cities of the League of Historical Cities.

During his visit to Japan, García met with officers of the Kyoto tourism promotion office to discuss possible schemes for collaborating in tourism promotion and best practices in the industry. He said he invited the technical team of Kyoto to visit the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) in the Dominican Republic for meetings with the Dominican officers.

While in Japan, García met with officers of All Nippon Airways (ANA), the Japanese airline, to explore possible flights to the Americas. The meeting was to establish bases for increasing connectivity between Japan and the Dominican Republic to increase the number of Japanese visitors.

He also met with representatives of the Japan Tour Operators Association that presented their needs and in which areas the Ministry of Tourism could collaborate to increase the numbers of Japanese tourists to the country.

Frontier to fly to PUJ from North Carolina
US carrier Frontier Airlines is promoting new flights to Punta Cana from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina. The airline has included the flights on their winter schedule for an increased range of sun destinations to customers from the “Triangle” area.

The Punta Cana flight will be rolled out in the fourth quarter of the year, in time for winter vacation travel with frequency and schedules to be announced in the next coming weeks.

Super fares for travel on Air Caraibes and Aeromexico
Air Caraibes is promoting its US$611 fares in economy without bags non-stop from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) and the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to Paris Orly International Airport (ORY). The fares are subject to availability and are for flights from 16 June to 14 July and from 4 September to 14 December 2018. The fares do not apply for most of July and August, peak travel months.

At the same time, Aeromexico is promoting its US$340 round trip to Mexico (in effect through 24 June subject to availability) for travel through February 2019 from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport to Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX). The airline has also announced a nonstop flight from Punta Cana to Mexico City starting in November and great introductory fares are to be expected.


5th DR Golf Travel Exchange in Punta Cana
Secrets Cap Cana and the Punta Espada Golf Course will be hosting golfers from the Dominican Republic and abroad for the 5th DR Golf Travel Exchange this 1-6 September 2018. Target Consultores de Mercadeo is the organizer of the event.

Teddy De Lara, president of Target, said that the event promotes the Dominican Republic as a prime Caribbean golf destination. He said winning the World Golf Awards as the best Golf Destination in the Caribbean for four consecutive years confirms the country’s leading position.

He explained the event brings together international tour operators specialized in the golf market segment, hoteliers, golf course directors and local tour operators.

In past years, participants have come from the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Russia, Australia, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and the United Arab Emirates, among others.
