Former President Leonel Fernández to keep campaigning
Former President Leonel Fernandez, who polls say is the man to beat for anyone aspiring to be the presidential candidate for the ruling PLD party, is not heeding the order by the Central Electoral Board to put an end to early electoral campaigning. Fernandez is combing towns and communities around the country to warm up his followers. Ahead of the presidential election set for May 2020, polls position him as the highest ranked eligible political candidate.

As reported in El Caribe, followers of the former three-term President, maintain they have a right to proselytize to position their candidate.

Former President Fernandez said in a statement that the resolution unanimously approved by the electoral body lacks legal base.” In reality, there is no norm in effect or by laws or rules of the political parties that prohibit carrying out these actions in the pre-campaign period,” read the statement.

While Fernandez admitted he shares the concern of certain sectors of the society in regards to early political activities, he considered there is no way to enforce the order.

The resolution of the JCE requests the collaboration of the Ministry of the Interior and Police, the governorships and the city governments to impose the provision. The measure would be in effect this week.

Father Rogelio will always be Father Rogelio
The Salesian Society defrocked Rogelio Cruz for refusing to travel for an indefinite course to Colombia. The former Father Rogelio Cruz said he is going to appeal the Roman Catholic Church decision given the process has been ridden with irregularities. Notwithstanding, he maintains that when he was ordained priest it was for life, and nothing is going to change on his perspective and actions. He said the only difference is that he is no longer a member of the Roman Catholic Church. “But the church is from the people and from Jesus, “ he stated. He said he will now be an independent.

He accuses big mining of wanting to get him out of circulation. The priest has been active helping people become aware of the negatives that mining brings to their communities. “This is still about Falcondo Xstrata Nickel, Barrick Gold and UniGold, the mining companies in this country that set out to get me out of circulation. The plan at first was to eliminate me, and as after we alerted international organizations that stopped. Now the plan is to neutralize the figure of Rogelio Cruz,” he told reporters.

Drought in San Juan de la Maguana
Farmers in San Juan de la Maguana province have reduced the area planted in rice this crop this year due to concerns about the long standing drought affecting the southwest. Water levels are low in the Sabaneta Dam. The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) has advised the region’s farmers to reduce crop acreage this year. Olgo Fernández of Indhri said the recommendation to reduce rice planting has already been passed on to Agriculture Minister Osmar Benítez and the general administrator of the Agriculture Bank, Carlos Segura Foster and to administrative minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta.

In an interview on D’Agenda with Hector Herrera Cabral, Segura explained the decision was taken because there just is not enough water to guarantee successful rice harvests.

Social program entices children to play Mozart
Emulating “the system,” the classic music education program that was so successful in Venezuela, Corinne Bouygus de Gobbie and her husband, film award-winning Sergio Gobbi, have developed the musical talents of Dominican children by giving them a chance to play musical instruments and learn the classics. The system is known to turn children who have never played an instrument into good musicians in less than two years.

The instruction is backed by Fundacion Fiesta Clasica, a nonprofit, that currently serves 200 children and would like to serve more, but needs more support. The classes take place on Monday through Friday from 2:30pm to 7:30pm at the Benemerita y Respetable Logia Cuna de America II in the Colonial City. The program already has the support of leading contemporary music composer and musician Juan Luis Guerra, and outstanding Dominican classic violinist, Aisha Syed Castro.

As reported in Diario Libre, the program is not a music conservatory, nor a music academy. It is a social program that began with 10 children from the barrio, then 15, then 20 and now 200. Dominique Mey, vice president of the foundation, says that if they had more space they could give instruction to more children.

Single moms prevalent in the Dominican Republic
The director of the National Office of Statistics (ONE), Alexandra Izquierdo says that according to civil registry records in 2016 there were 204,037 births. The bad news is that 88.6% were to women that were not legally married. This does not mean the child did not have a father in the household, just that the mothers reported their status as single in the civil state.

Of the births, women ages 25 to 29 years had the most children, with 36,571, of which 31,164 were of single moms and 5,371 of married moms.

Next there were 29.7% to mothers 20 to 24 years old, or 41,533, of which 39,047 were single moms and 2,483 were married.

The statistics show there were 22,326 births to females 15 to 19 years, of which 22,068 were to single moms and 2,483 to married moms. And there were 604 births to girls of 15 or less.

"These figures should motivate us to reflect because of the great proliferation of pregnancies in adolescents when they should instead be making the most of their youth, especially to finish their studies and seek a better future," explained Izquierdo.

Blackouts: the official explanations
Two to four hour blackouts are back, sometimes as long as 24 hours and are causing significant economic losses in Greater Santo Domingo.

One explanation given is that transmission lines at Km 15 in Azua and Canabacoa, Bonao were damaged. This, together with downed electricity pole on Av. Charles de Gaulle in eastern Santo Domingo caused the shutdown of five substations. Another explanation is that the recent heavy rains caused damage to the system.

The coordinating body for the National Interconnected Electrical System (OC-Seni) said that an undefined number of the power generators, including CESPM 1 and 3, and Itabo 2 had around 622 megawatts are offline and together with effects of the rains can be blamed for the prolonged blackouts.
