National Competitive Council meets in Presidential Palace
Among the most powerful economic and political players in the Dominican Republic met at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, 11 July 2018 to rubber stamp further ways to improve the business climate in the country. President Danilo Medina chaired the meeting. According to reports, the meeting was held to find more measures to create business and job opportunities for people as well as for improving the business climate.
The Presidency announced the issuing of Decree 258-18 that calls for an inventory of regulations in productive sectors of the country in order to subsequently cut red tape. Also enacted was Decree 259-18 that orders the implementation of a single stop window for paperwork for constructions. And Decree 260-18 that modifies the rules for the application of Industrial Property Law 20-00 on Commercial Name Registrations, that is under the National Office of Industrial Property (Onapi). The name registration procedure should take 24 hours.
The Presidency reported that previous meetings have produced decisions such as Decree 117-18 that established the automatic renewal of the sanitary registration and a digital platform to expedite its issuing, reducing red tape by 75%.
Attending the fourth session of the presidential competitiveness council were Presidency minister, Presidency administrative minister, the ministers of economy, hacienda, tourism, agriculture, industry and commerce, and the director of the Center for Export & Investment (CEI-RD).
The private sector was represented by the director of the National Business Council, and chief executives of Grupo M, Centro Cuesta Nacional, Banco Popular, BHD Leon, Grupo Punta Cana, Punta Caucedo Port, Grupo Inicia, Grupo SID, among others.

OISOE hospitals operations affected by rains
The media is focusing on how the rain poured inside several newly renovated public hospitals, renovations that have cost billions to taxpayers. These included the Francisco Moscoso Puello, Salvador B. Gautier, Maternidad San Lorenzo de Los Mina, Maternity Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia, Centro Cardio-Neuro Oftalmologico y Trasplante (Cecanot) in Greater Santo Domingo and the Juan Pablo Pina and Centro de Primer Nivel de Madre Vieja Norte, in San Cristóbal.
The director of the OISOE, Francisco Pagán minimized the damages and construction defects when visiting the recently renovated Hospital Francisco Moscoso Puello. The hospital was inaugurated on 5 April 2018. Engineer Francisco Pagán said that the water entered between the old and new construction and by an obstructed pipe. He said that teams were working to resolve the problem.

Rains cause collapse of gate to public school
Intense rains falling in Greater Santo Domingo on Tuesday, 10 July 2018 caused the collapse of the gate of a public high school that had been inaugurated just a month ago. The high school, the Liceo Estado de Israel is located in Bellas Colinas in Santo Domingo West. The residents in the area attributed the collapse to structural errors in the construction.

Haiti blames their crisis on the DR
Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant of Haiti blamed the crisis in Haiti on the reselling of petrol imported to Haiti in the Dominican Republic. He said the situation is unsustainable and has lead to the increase in fuel prices in Haiti.
In a press release, Jack Guy Lafontant said that Haiti sources fuel at a very low price, much lower than in the Dominican Republic. He says the fact that across the border prices are 43% and 37% more expensive has created a market for their irregular resale.
The president of the Dominican Petroleum Refinery, Félix Jiménez (Felucho) explained that businesses of this kind with the refinery are impossible.
Jiménez said that the Refinery does have clients in the country that sell fuel to the Haitian government, but that it is not the Dominican Petroleum Refinery directly.

Cedimat to hold clinics for spinal surgery
Cedimat, whose full name is the Center of Diagnostics and Advanced Medicine and of Medical Conferences and Telemedicine, will hold next week a surgical clinic for persons suffering from spinal issues. To schedule the clinical procedures, potential patients will be evaluated, particularly children, teenagers and young adults. The staff will then elect those that require surgery and the correction of deformities.
Participating in the surgery will be doctors from Cedimat and the International Surgery Foundation that is a Christian nonprofit. The evaluations will be carried out under the direction of Dr. Duane D. H. Pitt, from Phoenix, Arizona, a specialist in spinal surgery. He will work with the team of orthopedic doctors and surgeons were concerned about the lack of medical attention for children with spinal problems.

Academy of History commemorates founding of Trinitarios
The Dominican Academy of History began its commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the founding of the secret society known as “La Trinitaria” that headed the struggle for Dominican independence in the first half of the 19th century.
The Trinitarios would gather in a small house on what is today Monsignor Nouel Street in the Colonial City. Originally, they were nine persons headed by nation founder Juan Pablo Duarte who took a sacred oath to fight for Dominican independence. History tells that the founding Trinitarios were Juan Pablo Duarte, who was joined by Juan Isidro Perez, Pedro Alejandro Pina, Felix Maria Ruiz, José Maria Serra, Felipe Alfau, Juan Nepomuceno Ravelo, Benito Gonzalez and Jacinto de la Concha. The group was later joined by Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, Matias Ramon Mella and Vivente Celestino Duarte.
The name Trinitarios has a double meaning. In the first place, it honors the Holy Trinity, but it also is founded on the principles of a secret society where each member recruits an additional two members who do not know the names of any other members, thus preserving the secret nature of the group.
During the event commemoration, busts of Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco Del Rosario Sanchez and Matias Ramón Mella were unveiled at the Academy headquarters at Calle Las Mercedes 204 in the Colonial City.

Bishops gather to reflect on priest training
The Dominican Conference of Bishops, that gathers all of the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic, celebrated their 56th Assembly with a spiritual retreat to reflect on their congregations and the future of the church. They reviewed the criteria for the formation of future priests and all the seminaries, not only here but also around the world.
In a press release after the meeting, the bishops said they had a committed “to motivate seminarians to take on a greater identification with Christ…” The bishops want to emphasize not only the spiritual but also the human, community and intellectual aspects that should contribute to the development of priests who are leaders and models of service.
The prelates of the Catholic Church also called upon their social workers and assistance agencies such as Caritas (quite similar in many cases to CARE) to continue joining forces in response to the needs of the people and to the projects that are carried out in each diocese of the country, giving the example of “Project Man” that seeks to rehabilitate persons with addictions, and the food banks that distribute food to the elderly and schools.

Novelist Avelino Stanley presents children’s book on bullying
Before an important group of writers, friends and family Dominican novelist Avelino Stanley presented a children’s book titled “El triunfo de los cuatro aces” (Win by Four Aces). The book deals with the issue of bullying in schools and is based on the Dominican reality. It seeks to contribute to foster diversity and change the traditional visions held by schoolchildren.
Jenny Monteiro, a literary critic and author of books for children and young people audiences presented the children’s book to the audience. She said that the novel is based on a careful research regarding school bullying and the application of the KIVA Method, a Scandinavian technique that has been successful in undermining bullying within the schools.

DR leads in teenage pregnancies in the Caribbean
Guiomar Bay, an official of Population Affairs of the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (Celade), on occasion of World Population Day on 11 July 2018 shared the fact the Dominican Republic leads in teenage pregnancies in the Caribbean. The data was shared during a presentation of data on generational replacement numbers of children and teenage pregnancies.
Figures from Celade show that the average of Latin America is at the level of generational replacement of 2.1 children per woman, which is the minimum number of births that guarantees the renewal of a population, with some differences between countries in their overall rate of fertility (TGF).
The data shows that generational replacement rates for regional countries are:
Puerto Rico (1.3), Brazil (1.7), Cuba (1.7), Chile (1.8), Costa Rica (1.8), Colombia (1.9), El Salvador (1.9), Uruguay (2), Mexico (2.2), Nicaragua (2.2), Venezuela (2.3), Argentina (2.3), Pero (2.4), Dominican Republic (2.4), Honduras (2.5), Paraguay (2.5), Ecuador (2.5), Panama (2.5), Bolivia (2.9), Haiti (2.9) and Guatemala (3).
Celade reports that Latin America has achieved a reduction in the generational replacement that contrasts with the high teenage pregnancy rates, only surpassed in the world by countries in Africa. The region reports 66.5% births per 1,000 young women ages 15 to 19 years. The regional average is 46 births per 1,000 young people. The report says that the Latin American region is the only one in the world where the number of teenage pregnancies is on the rise, as confirmed by a report by the Panamerican Health Organization, Unicef and the United Nations Fund for Population.
The Dominican Republic leads the region with teenage births, with 100.6. Other countries with high rates are Nicaragua (92.8), Guyana (90.1), Guatemala (84), Venezuela (80.9), Panama (78.5), Ecuador (77.3) and Bolivia (72.6).
UNFPA says that the poorer Latin American women do not have access to birth control.

Don’t drive at night on Las Americas
Journalist Felicia Mota and her daughter Alicia Morillo alerted against driving at night on the Las Americas Expressway that links the Las Americas International Airport and the city of Santo Domingo. She reports that unscrupulous persons continue to throw stones and other objects at the vehicles in the evening, in order to cause windshield breaks so the drivers stop, making them victims to robberies.
As reported, Mota said that she was a victim of the assailants when driving between La Ureña and La Caleta. She suspects the purpose was to force them to stop. "I got nervous and asked my daughter not to stop the vehicle because these criminals would rob us and I told her to keep going," said Felicia Mota, who is a television producer.
Mota said that the seriousness of the case is that when she went to the insurance company for the damaged vehicle, she was told that hers was the 12th claim by clients who had suffered the same situation. She said that many are entire families returning from beach outings in the eastern part of the country.
While the new alert is for driving on Las Americas Expressway, the general advice is to avoid driving at night in the country.

DR takes 446 athletes to Barranquilla Central American Games
The Dominican Republic will be taking a delegation that is 446-athlete strong to the Central American and Caribbean Games in Baranquilla, from 19 July to 3 August 2018. The Dominican Olympic Committee president Luis Mejia and Sports Minister Danilo Díaz announced the delegation will be of 600 persons including coaches, physicians and officers. This is the largest delegation ever to a Central American and Caribbean Games. Of the total, 268 are men and 178 women that will compete in 32 sports. The delegation head is Edwin Rodríguez.
In the previous games held in Veracruz, Mexico, the Dominican Republic won 77 medals (20 gold, 34 silver and 23 bronze). Sports Minister Díaz said the government had invested around RD$160 million to prepare the team.

DR makes it to semifinals in Volleyball Pan Am
In their last chance, the Dominican Republic defeated the tough Puerto Rican team and made it to the semifinals of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Championship taking place at the Volleyball Pavilion in Santo Domingo. The win also qualified the Dominican team to play in the summer 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The DR defeated Puerto Rico 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10) to advance to the semifinals.
The Dominican Republic will now play Brazil in the semifinals while United States will battle Canada with all four team already qualified to Lima.
The DR had defeated Costa Rica and Peru, but when it was time to match Canada, the Queens of the Caribbean couldn’t put their best together. The DR had lost 3-0 (25-23 25-14, 25-20) to Canada that moved on to the semifinals. Both teams had arrived to the match with 2-0 win records. The loss to Canada made the match between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico more important.

Pedro Mendez presents his abstract collection
Quinta Dominica in the Colonial City is inviting to the exhibition by Dominican sculptor Pedro Mendez that opens at 7:30pm on Thursday, 12 July 2018. Mendez is best known for his work as a member of the Santos de Palos Bonao Sculptural Collective. But this time around, his collection works are abstractions using metal and wood.
Mendez is a professor of sculpture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, member of the Dominican College of Plastic Artists and founding member of the Santos de Palos de Bonao Sculptural Collective.
He has more than 40 years as a teacher of artistic education in universities, academies and arts workshops. More than 30 solo exhibitions and dozens of collective national and international. His works have been exhibited in Curacao, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, the United States, Italy and Germany. In 1986, he participated in the First Ibero-American Sculpture Symposium.
His works have been selected in different national biennials. In 1986, he won the award at the Eduardo León Jimenez Biennial of the Arts Contest in Santiago, as well as several other awards for his contributions to sculpture in different regions of the country. In Puerto Rico, he receives recognition for his work on the Virgin of Guadalupe and one of his works was distinguished with the seal of quality granted by UNESCO.

The Trinitarios would gather in a small house on what is today Monsignor Nouel Street in the Colonial City. Originally, they were nine persons headed by nation founder Juan Pablo Duarte who took a sacred oath to fight for Dominican independence. History tells that the founding Trinitarios were Juan Pablo Duarte, who was joined by Juan Isidro Perez, Pedro Alejandro Pina, Felix Maria Ruiz, José Maria Serra, Felipe Alfau, Juan Nepomuceno Ravelo, Benito Gonzalez and Jacinto de la Concha. The group was later joined by Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, Matias Ramon Mella and Vivente Celestino Duarte.
The name Trinitarios has a double meaning. In the first place, it honors the Holy Trinity, but it also is founded on the principles of a secret society where each member recruits an additional two members who do not know the names of any other members, thus preserving the secret nature of the group.
During the event commemoration, busts of Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco Del Rosario Sanchez and Matias Ramón Mella were unveiled at the Academy headquarters at Calle Las Mercedes 204 in the Colonial City.

Bishops gather to reflect on priest training
The Dominican Conference of Bishops, that gathers all of the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic, celebrated their 56th Assembly with a spiritual retreat to reflect on their congregations and the future of the church. They reviewed the criteria for the formation of future priests and all the seminaries, not only here but also around the world.
In a press release after the meeting, the bishops said they had a committed “to motivate seminarians to take on a greater identification with Christ…” The bishops want to emphasize not only the spiritual but also the human, community and intellectual aspects that should contribute to the development of priests who are leaders and models of service.
The prelates of the Catholic Church also called upon their social workers and assistance agencies such as Caritas (quite similar in many cases to CARE) to continue joining forces in response to the needs of the people and to the projects that are carried out in each diocese of the country, giving the example of “Project Man” that seeks to rehabilitate persons with addictions, and the food banks that distribute food to the elderly and schools.

Novelist Avelino Stanley presents children’s book on bullying
Before an important group of writers, friends and family Dominican novelist Avelino Stanley presented a children’s book titled “El triunfo de los cuatro aces” (Win by Four Aces). The book deals with the issue of bullying in schools and is based on the Dominican reality. It seeks to contribute to foster diversity and change the traditional visions held by schoolchildren.
Jenny Monteiro, a literary critic and author of books for children and young people audiences presented the children’s book to the audience. She said that the novel is based on a careful research regarding school bullying and the application of the KIVA Method, a Scandinavian technique that has been successful in undermining bullying within the schools.

DR leads in teenage pregnancies in the Caribbean
Guiomar Bay, an official of Population Affairs of the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (Celade), on occasion of World Population Day on 11 July 2018 shared the fact the Dominican Republic leads in teenage pregnancies in the Caribbean. The data was shared during a presentation of data on generational replacement numbers of children and teenage pregnancies.
Figures from Celade show that the average of Latin America is at the level of generational replacement of 2.1 children per woman, which is the minimum number of births that guarantees the renewal of a population, with some differences between countries in their overall rate of fertility (TGF).
The data shows that generational replacement rates for regional countries are:
Puerto Rico (1.3), Brazil (1.7), Cuba (1.7), Chile (1.8), Costa Rica (1.8), Colombia (1.9), El Salvador (1.9), Uruguay (2), Mexico (2.2), Nicaragua (2.2), Venezuela (2.3), Argentina (2.3), Pero (2.4), Dominican Republic (2.4), Honduras (2.5), Paraguay (2.5), Ecuador (2.5), Panama (2.5), Bolivia (2.9), Haiti (2.9) and Guatemala (3).
Celade reports that Latin America has achieved a reduction in the generational replacement that contrasts with the high teenage pregnancy rates, only surpassed in the world by countries in Africa. The region reports 66.5% births per 1,000 young women ages 15 to 19 years. The regional average is 46 births per 1,000 young people. The report says that the Latin American region is the only one in the world where the number of teenage pregnancies is on the rise, as confirmed by a report by the Panamerican Health Organization, Unicef and the United Nations Fund for Population.
The Dominican Republic leads the region with teenage births, with 100.6. Other countries with high rates are Nicaragua (92.8), Guyana (90.1), Guatemala (84), Venezuela (80.9), Panama (78.5), Ecuador (77.3) and Bolivia (72.6).
UNFPA says that the poorer Latin American women do not have access to birth control.

Don’t drive at night on Las Americas
Journalist Felicia Mota and her daughter Alicia Morillo alerted against driving at night on the Las Americas Expressway that links the Las Americas International Airport and the city of Santo Domingo. She reports that unscrupulous persons continue to throw stones and other objects at the vehicles in the evening, in order to cause windshield breaks so the drivers stop, making them victims to robberies.
As reported, Mota said that she was a victim of the assailants when driving between La Ureña and La Caleta. She suspects the purpose was to force them to stop. "I got nervous and asked my daughter not to stop the vehicle because these criminals would rob us and I told her to keep going," said Felicia Mota, who is a television producer.
Mota said that the seriousness of the case is that when she went to the insurance company for the damaged vehicle, she was told that hers was the 12th claim by clients who had suffered the same situation. She said that many are entire families returning from beach outings in the eastern part of the country.
While the new alert is for driving on Las Americas Expressway, the general advice is to avoid driving at night in the country.

DR takes 446 athletes to Barranquilla Central American Games
The Dominican Republic will be taking a delegation that is 446-athlete strong to the Central American and Caribbean Games in Baranquilla, from 19 July to 3 August 2018. The Dominican Olympic Committee president Luis Mejia and Sports Minister Danilo Díaz announced the delegation will be of 600 persons including coaches, physicians and officers. This is the largest delegation ever to a Central American and Caribbean Games. Of the total, 268 are men and 178 women that will compete in 32 sports. The delegation head is Edwin Rodríguez.
In the previous games held in Veracruz, Mexico, the Dominican Republic won 77 medals (20 gold, 34 silver and 23 bronze). Sports Minister Díaz said the government had invested around RD$160 million to prepare the team.

DR makes it to semifinals in Volleyball Pan Am
In their last chance, the Dominican Republic defeated the tough Puerto Rican team and made it to the semifinals of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Championship taking place at the Volleyball Pavilion in Santo Domingo. The win also qualified the Dominican team to play in the summer 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The DR defeated Puerto Rico 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10) to advance to the semifinals.
The Dominican Republic will now play Brazil in the semifinals while United States will battle Canada with all four team already qualified to Lima.
The DR had defeated Costa Rica and Peru, but when it was time to match Canada, the Queens of the Caribbean couldn’t put their best together. The DR had lost 3-0 (25-23 25-14, 25-20) to Canada that moved on to the semifinals. Both teams had arrived to the match with 2-0 win records. The loss to Canada made the match between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico more important.

Pedro Mendez presents his abstract collection
Quinta Dominica in the Colonial City is inviting to the exhibition by Dominican sculptor Pedro Mendez that opens at 7:30pm on Thursday, 12 July 2018. Mendez is best known for his work as a member of the Santos de Palos Bonao Sculptural Collective. But this time around, his collection works are abstractions using metal and wood.
Mendez is a professor of sculpture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, member of the Dominican College of Plastic Artists and founding member of the Santos de Palos de Bonao Sculptural Collective.
He has more than 40 years as a teacher of artistic education in universities, academies and arts workshops. More than 30 solo exhibitions and dozens of collective national and international. His works have been exhibited in Curacao, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, the United States, Italy and Germany. In 1986, he participated in the First Ibero-American Sculpture Symposium.
His works have been selected in different national biennials. In 1986, he won the award at the Eduardo León Jimenez Biennial of the Arts Contest in Santiago, as well as several other awards for his contributions to sculpture in different regions of the country. In Puerto Rico, he receives recognition for his work on the Virgin of Guadalupe and one of his works was distinguished with the seal of quality granted by UNESCO.

The 7th Annual Dominican Film Festival will take place in New York City from 24-29 July 2018. The DFFNY seeks to promote the new generation of Dominican filmmakers along with the established ones.
