Major international cycling race set for Punta Cana in 2019
For the first time a GFNY Dominican Republic cycling race will be held in the Dominican Republic. The event is scheduled to be run on 7 April 2019 in the Punta Cana area and nearby mountains.

"The celebration of the GFNY series in the Dominican Republic represents a vote of confidence in the positioning of Punta Cana as a world class tourist destination. This is an added value to the country as it places it within the global circuit of sports tourism that is increasingly growing worldwide," Acosta pointed out.

The famous “gran fondo” race is designed to provide riders with a combination of fast paced start, challenging climbs and rolling hills finish, so that everyone can maximize their cycling strengths. Gran Fondo races are a type of long-distance road cycling that are individually chip-timed (start to finish) races with prizes for the fastest riders in each category. The format combines the way runners’ marathons and biking races are organized. They have lead and follow cars, judges, safety escort, police escort, as well as technical and medical assistance.
Antonio Acosta, president of the firm that has the local franchise for the event, says that in the race competitors compete against the clock and themselves in a tough physical challenge.

The 7 April 2019 race will be run with two course options. One of 150 km and a climb of 973m and another of 94 km with a climb of 398m. The organizers have framed the 150 km event to run alongside the coastline of Punta Cana, heading through countryside in the eastern mountain range to end with a return through the rolling hills of Anamuya. Both races take off from Puntacana Village, 1 km away from the Punta Cana International Airport.

Registration for both events is now open at http://www.gfnyrd.com

In 2019, GFNY races will also be held in Philippines, Indonesia, Uruguay, Colombia, Israel, USA (NY), Polland and Costa Rica. The franchise was incorporated in 2010 and has carried out more than 17 events in 20 countries with the participation of over 40,000 cyclists.
