Advances on Line 2B Santo Domingo Metro, start date yet to be set
Yesterday, Monday, 30 July 2018, the director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transport (OPRET), Antonio Saleta García, explained that the cars for Line 2B of the Santo Domingo Metro that arrived last week are being readied and tested in accordance with international norms. Meanwhile, the maintenance team at OPRET continues to paint and clean and install air conditioning in the areas for the new line. According to OPRET, the personnel who will work on line 2B are ready, as are the logistics. Yet he said that the date for their incorporation into the service and the start of Line 2B has yet to be set.

The new line has four stations that are along Avenida San Vicente de Paul, the first: Ercilia Pepín on Avenida Venezuela next to the entrance to Tres Brazos, the next, Rosa Duarte on Avenida Fernández de Navarrete. Another, the Trina de Moya de Vázquez next to the street of the same name and the final one Concepción Bona next to the City Hall in Santo Domingo East and in front of the MegaCentro.

The entering into operation of the line will make it possible for a person to go from MegaCentro to the furthermost western station at Luperon- Maria Montez (a distance of around 12.8 km) for only RD$20, big savings for those who live in eastern Santo Domingo and commute to work in western Santo Domingo.

Survey reveals middle class loses interest in politics
The president of the market research company Asisa Research Group has concluded that persons classified as upper middle class and the upper class are least likely to vote in the presidential, congressional and municipal elections in the Dominican Republic.

Lilian Pagán explained that traditionally barely four of the ten people in these classes decide to cast ballots. She noted that there is now a phenomenon in the country that the persons with medium incomes are becoming not only disinterested in political affairs and the problems affecting Dominican society as a whole.

Interviewed by Héctor Herrera Cabral on the program D´ Agenda, for Telesistema Channel 11, Pagán said that the candidates and parties should bear this in mind for the upcoming elections as this change could alter the previous patterns of voting.

Altice to sell towers in Dominican Republic
Altice Europe has agreed to sell its Dominican Republic telecoms towers business, Teletorres del Caribe, to Phoenix Tower International in a deal valuing the business at US$170 million, as the telecoms and cable group continues to shed assets to cut debt.

Altice said the sale to Phoenix Tower, owned by private equity firm Blackstone, was expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2018. The sale of the assets was driven by Altice’s desire to cut debts and improve the company’s business performance.

Altice will continue its telecom services in the Dominican Republic but says the sale of the towers will enable it to improve its current level service.
