Chinese Duarte?
After years of Dominican identifying with a single portrait and bust of Duarte, now sculptors and their patrons are getting creative.

Social media and the press recently criticized a sculpture commissioned by the Ministry of Defense for the similarities of the new Duarte with President Danilo Medina located at the Plaza de la Bandera.

Now, a new bust was unveiled in the People’s Republic of China, and the president of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), Federico Antún Batlle (Quique) says more than the Duarte everyone knows, this Duarte has a distinct Asian appearance.

The new bust was sponsored by the Dominican Republic through the diplomatic mission in Beijing. It was unveiled at the Sculptures Park of the Beijing Jintai Art Museum at the Chaoyang Park in China.

The museum is regarded as China's largest folk art museum. It relies on its unique art originality and cultural collections to present China's profound traditional culture and its charms on the international stage, and introduce the colorful arts of foreign countries into China.

Battle urged the Ministry of Culture, the Instituto Duartiano, and the Museum of History and Geography take a role so that statues and busts honoring the founding fathers are accurately depicted.

Odebrecht still holds seen construction projects in DR
Odebrecht has seven projects under construction in the Dominican Republic. El Dia reports that the company government contractor permit (RPE) was suspended last year.

The company, whose officials admitted in a New York Court in December 2016 to having paid US$92 million in bribes to Dominican officers to expedite the contracting, has contracts open for the construction of the Ecovia in Santiago, the Hermanas Mirabal aqueduct, the Cibao-Sur highway, the Corredor Duarte II and the ports of Samana and Sabana de la Mar. The projects are from 60 to 95% complete, according to Odebrecht documents, as reported by El Dia.

Nevertheless, Gonzalo Castillo Public Works Minister said in January that the projects were paralysed after the suspension of the RPE.

As reported in El Dia, Odebrecht has appointed a new director Marcelo Hofke and says that the company is working with absolute transparency in its operations.

The Attorney General Office (PGR) announced Odebrecht had paid US$30 million as part of the deal signed with the PGR that impedes the Dominican state from suing Odebrecht. Odebrecht has sued the Dominican government in a US court for an additional US$750 million to complete the Punta Catalina power central, a reportedly turn-key operation.
