AE's Linked Article said:
Specifically, Harriot attributes this poverty to an odious agreement foisted upon Haiti in 1825 by the French, which required Haiti to pay ‘reparations’ to France for lost property after Haitian slaves heroically won their independence in 1804—the lost ‘property’ in question was the Haitian slaves themselves.

Haiti is paying dearly for a seriously bad deal.

A better option would have been to kill all the French in Haiti.

At least they may have had more trees.

Haiti also had a couple of purges along the wat they drained the country of education, professional gubmint bureaucrats, engineers and business professionals. Bad moves.

They can blame themselves.

The real question: "is Haiti fixable?"

To answer the question that entitles this thread, Haiti.
Until that one simple admission is made, no progress will ever be made.

No, Haiti is not fixable

I have new neighbors that spent a number ( I think more than 5) of the past years in Haiti. They were there trying to fix Haiti. I asked them if Haiti is fixable.

They had no doubt that the answer was no. Haiti has no way to be fixed. The only way Haiti could be rebuilt is if the population was replaced with one that actually cared enough to rebuild the country. They left Haiti after years of trying when they realized there was no solution and they gave up trying to help.

The Haitians that are lucky enough to leave the country and prosper do not support those that have left Haiti, they are just happy to be anywhere else. They realize that any effort put into Haiti with its current population is just wasted effort.

People who are never held accountable for their actions will never accept any responsible for anything. This always leads to complete and utter failure.

Making excuses for Haiti's failures is not helpful.

Haiti is a failed state, and not only that, it has reached the point of no return. If the Dominican Republic wants to survive, it will have make some extremely hard choices and then enforce them ruthlessly; otherwise, the DR will collapse. The only choice left for the DR is a stark one.

He's from Vox. He left a bunch of things out of his piece because they didn't fit his pre-concluded narrative, either from ignorance or willful omission. 'Nuff said...

When he quoted the article of the constitution, notice how he conveniently left out the ‘exceptions to persons in transit.’

Like others already said, the guy already knew what the message of the story should be before he even visited the island.

As soon that I started to watch the video I knew it was going to be in favor of the Haitians. Through the years I noticed that any documentary on the issue that starts in Haiti somehow ends up being anti-Dominican. Its as if people’s intentions are indirectly manifested on the country they decide to initiate their documentaries.

This is an excellent point. The Haitian invasion and occupation was horrendous. You won't hear the Left mention it because it doesn't fit their narrative of the Haitian people's supposedly intrinsic innocence. This is why studying history is so important.

I can't believe how ignorant people (including the political classes) are these days. It is an extremely dangerous situation. People are using historical calculus that isn't based on facts, but instead rely on historical revision shaped by political correctness and a spectacularly warped liberal ideology.

It always comes down to DNA.

No mention of that in the video either.

Science is fact.

The left likes to ignore it, except when they are religion bashing.

This makes me recall an incident from about 10 years ago. Mr AE worked at a casino in Atlantic City, and one day ended up in a conversation with a Haitian born coworker. They had a spirited debate and he was shocked to hear the Haitian say that Haiti invaded DR to help them! Because the Dominican president begged them for help. This is what they are taught in Haitian schools. Mr AE asked if he was aware of the atrocities, massacres, etc., and the Haitian insisted that none of that ever happened.

Religion and DNA are linked? If so, I would be a Catholic and not an atheist.

As for Haiti, yes there could certainly come a time when many thousands of Haitians attempt to cross into the DR simultaneously. That would be bad.

Papa Doc and Baby Doc are hands down most
responsible for Haiti's modern day problems.
No doubt Haiti is a sh*thole but as I stated several
times before when it comes to this issue....
Haiti's problems need to be solved by Haitian people
on Haitian soil.
