The president of the Dominican Association of Farmers and Farmers (ADHA), Julio De Beras, reported that a severe drought has affected the production of milk and meat in the eastern region of the country, especially in Higüey, El Seibo, La Romana and Hato Higher.

"The drought has had a terrible impact," said De Beras when asked by LISTÍN DIARIO about this phenomenon, which is worrying for the landowners of those provinces, which represent 30% of the nation's milk production.

The holder of the ADHA regretted that the milk producers are decreasing their income and that the meat is deteriorating because two months ago the drought is greater and in those areas it rains infrequently.

Challenges
A challenge for farmers, says De Beras, is to get the Dominican government to pay attention to local roads, since the bad conditions they are in are causing damage to vehicles.

"It is necessary that the government and the Minister of Agriculture give a look to the field in order to shovel that problem a bit," he said.

De Beras commented that the second challenge is to control bovine diseases, transmissible to humans, such as brucellosis and tuberculosis.

In this regard, the Director of Animal Health of the General Directorate of Livestock (Digega), Lissette Gómez, stressed that to combat these conditions there must be a public-private partnership to monitor and control livestock.

Meeting
In order to promote best practices in this economic activity, the ADHA, together with other entities such as the National Association of Beef Cattle Producers (Asocarne) and the Digega, held yesterday the seminar "Transformation for the innovation of beef cattle breeding".

The president of Asocarne, Enrique De Castro, explained that the workshop seeks to strengthen the basic aspects that affect the management and reproduction of beef cattle.

"The eradication of diseases such as tuberculosis and brucellosis is fundamental for the development of the carnage and to be able to access the markets we have in mind," De Castro said.

Among the topics developed were the promotion of improved management of meat farms, livestock feeding, trade policies and agricultural trade agreements, non-genetic factors, breed crossings and sustainable livestock.

"This is a grain of sand in the effort to improve the farms to put more money in the pockets of farmers and thus bring greater prosperity to the fields of our nation, but for this we have to count on our effort and our productivity ", Concluded the representative of the meat producers.
