Today I visited the Banco Central office in Santiago to enquire.

I was wondering about opening a currency exchange business. There is certainly one unfilled need, in Dajabón, where there is no bank or exchange house handling Haitian gourdes.

The guy phoned Santo Domingo to find somebody who could help me. To my surprise, it is illegal to exchange Haitian money in the Dominican Republic because it is not on the list of currencies that licensed agencies are allowed to exchange,

Pretty sick, eh?

Haitian money changer's handle the exchanges here in Santiago
at the Mercado Modelo entrance on Calle Espana. Like so many
other activities here, whether or not its legal doesn't seem to
prevent them from doing it out in the open. There is also a guy
with a small colmado in La Joya who will exange them.
