New Spirit Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to Las Americas
The sound of typical Dominican music produced by a group of “perico ripiao” sounded throughout the arrival terminal at the Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo late last week as the inaugural Spirit Airlines flight arrived from Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida. The flights depart Orlando at 3:40pm with a scheduled arrival time of 6:20pm.

Spirit operations manager, Camilo Martelo, explained that with the opening of the SDQ-MCO route, Spirit Airlines increases the number of its weekly flights from the Dominican Republic to the United States to 21. The airline also flies to Fort Lauderdale from Las Americas.

The flight that began on 4 October will operate four times a week through 7 November. Starting 8 November, the flight will have a daily frequency.

Air travel up 17% in September 2018
Air travel is up 17% during September 2018, reports the Civil Aviation Board (JAC). Some 911,198 persons flew in and out of the country. The 17% increase reflects the slow in arrivals and departures due to flight cancellations caused by Hurricane Maria that affected the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico in September 2017.

JAC statistics says the number of passengers arriving in September is 132,088 more than in the same period last year. Overall, from January to September 2018, some 11,203,014 passengers have flown on incoming or outgoing flights, for 5.4% increase and 571,586 in numbers.

Punta Cana International Airport is the leading international airport in number of passengers transported. Some 438,631 persons arrived in September 2018. This is 71,625 more than in September 2018, for a 19% increase. Travel for Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo was 281,951 air passengers, a difference of 11%.

Weddings to be easier in Punta Cana
The Chamber of Deputies has moved on the  approval of the opening of a new justice of peace in the touristic municipality of Verón-Punta Cana. This would make weddings in the area easier. In the past, the judge presiding over the weddings in Punta Cana had to travel from the city of Higuey.

Deputy Juan Julio Campos Ventura (PLD-La Altagracia) is responsible for pushing through the bill that creates the new justice of peace office. He argued that Verón has experienced notable economic growth, mainly due to the bonanza of the tourism sector. The justice of peace will service the increasing local population and visiting tourists.

Punta Cana is the leading tourism destination of the Dominican Republic.

DR reaches out to Japanese to visit
The Ministry of Tourism, in a strategic alliance with the Embassy of Japan in the Dominican Republic, and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), participated in the Travel Tourism Expo Japan held 20-23 September 2018 at the Tokyo Big Sight Conference Center. This was an opportunity to present Dominican travel vacations to the Japanese market.

For two days, the Dominican delegation met with Japan travel professionals and conversations were opened for future business with key players such as JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, KNT-CT Holdings, Hankyu Travel International, as reported by the Ministry of Tourism. The Dominican delegation also held promising talks with World Air-Sea Service, Meitetsu World Travel, Rakuten, ANA, JAL Pack, Nihonbashi Travelers, among others.

"Our participation in the Travel Tourism Expo Japan is proof of the high interest of this market in the Dominican Republic,” said Indira José, international promotion director for the Ministry. She said Japanese showed much interest in stories on Dominican cuisine, nature travel, and complementary attractions around the country.

José expressed appreciation for the support of the Japanese Embassy and JICA. “With teamwork and an invaluable collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic of Japan and JICA, we managed to present the best tourism promotion of our country to the Japanese market," added José. She explained the Japanese are interested in authentic cultural experiences. Over the years, JICA has been very active identifying and supporting community and ecotourism opportunities in small towns and rural areas, well off the beaten path of mass tourism.

José said that as part of activities of the participation of the Dominican delegation, a meeting was held with All Nipon Airways (ANA) and it was agreed that ANA and United Airlines would codeshare to facilitate air connections and more arrivals of Japanese to the country.

Travel Tourism Expo Japan is organized by the Japan Travel and Tourism Association (JTTA), Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) and Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Its organizers say over 207,000 persons visited the stands and participated in exposition activities this year.
