Best Hotels Cabeza de Toro under construction in Punta Cana
Best Hotels, the Spanish Canary Islands hotel chain, hosted President Danilo Medina and Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Best Hotels Cabeza de Toro on 17 October 2018. The resort will have 600 rooms and is scheduled to open in October 2019. Best Hotels founder, José Batalla, came for the ceremony.

The centrally-located resort will feature a convention center, children’s area, discotheque, bars, boutiques, 1,300 square meter casino, among other facilities, says Best In Pro Group managing director, Sergio Hernández. It will be located around a 15-minute drive from the Punta Cana International Airport.

This is the first property of Best Hotels outside of Spain. The chain operates 33 properties in Spain located in Costa de la Luz, Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical, Costa de Almería, Costa Dorada, Mallorca, Costa Brava, Andorra and Barcelona city. The company has its headquarters in Benalmádena (Málaga) of the Costa del Sol.

Ready to service tourists from the US West Coast
The Ministry of Tourism has opened a Tourism Promotion Office for the West Coast of the United States. The office is based in Los Angeles, California. The new director, Aldonsa Alcántara said the office a result of the President Medina’s goal of the country receiving 10 million tourists per year. She said that California is regarded as the fifth largest economy in the world. The 2017 Gross State Product of California was US$2.747 trillion, surpassing the United Kingdom's $2.625 trillion Gross Domestic Product.

Alcántara said actions are underway to attract direct flights from Los Angeles to the Dominican Republic. She said the Tourism Promotion Office is working in collaboration with officers at the country’s general consulate in Los Angeles. The new office will service California and west coast market. The West Coast office is now responsible for attracting and servicing tourists from the states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and California.

The new office is operating from #318 at Central Park Business Center at 3500 West Olive Ave., Burbank, California, in front of the Warner Brothers Studios.

New flights improve connections at Las Americas
Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo continues to receive new flights, improving the positioning of the capital city airport as a leading regional airport. The airport is second in air travel in the country, after Punta Cana International (PUJ).

Aerodom-Vinci, the airport management company, reports on the new direct scheduled frequencies in 2018 arriving to Las Americas International Airport. Among these in 2018:
Fly All Ways from Curacao began two weekly frequencies on Wednesdays and Sunday to Las Americas International.

Winair and InterCaribbean are flying daily to St. Marteen.

Turpial began direct flights to Valencia, Venezuela, with flights on Mondays and Fridays.

JetBlue opened its Santo Domingo-Newark (USA) daily flight.

Spirit began daily direct service to Orlando, Florida and Newark.

A weekly Friday flight to Santo Domingo on Blue Panorama is scheduled to begin this December 2018.

Aerodom-Vinci reports that it is investing upwards of US$30 million in the Las Americas International Airport to improve the passenger experience, including optimizing its baggage handling system and major improvements in the airport access and parking system.


Fly from Pittsburg, Brussels and Warsaw to Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) improved its connections in 2018 with the arrival of a direct Allegiant Air weekly Friday flight to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

Also new in 2018 to Puerto Plata, the low cost carrier Jetairfly is now connecting Brussels in Belgium on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Aerodom-Vinci, the airport management company, announces that coming soon is a direct flight from POP to Warsaw, the capital of Poland, bringing thousands of European tourists from northern Europe.


Nordwind Airlines connects Moscow and Santo Domingo
Nordwind Airlines is now connecting Santo Domingo for the first time with Moscow, Russia. The carrier inaugurated a first charter flight from Moscow (MOW) to Las Americas International Airport (SDQ), with the arrival of 486 tourists from Russia. The first arrival was received by the Aerodom-Vinci airport authorities with the traditional jet of water sprayed by a fire department vehicle.

The airline is flying a 777 300ER aircraft, with capacity for 500 passengers.
Aerodom says that Nordwind Airlines will also fly the Moscow-Samana route.


Best Flowboarders head to Punta Cana for championship

Flowboarding is described as a hybrid boardsport, which has been evolving since the 1980’s. The crossover sport combines the progression, maneuvers, and skills from the core action sports of skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding and to a lessor extent, wakeboarding and skimboarding.

The disciplines of flowboarding include stand-up riding and bodyboarding. The sport mostly attracts athletes in their teens to 30 years old, the sport’s its versatility attracts practitioners of all ages.
