For those who live in Canada and the USA and love Cafe Santo Domingo, there is a 25% off discount for Black Friday with free shipping to Canada and the USA. A box of 16 packages of coffee comes to 110$. The website is dominicansierragroup.com

and at Metro in Toronto. $9.99 Canadian or less when on sale. No need to buy in bulk. Hard to believe in the "duty free" store in Puerto Plata the price is $12.00 U.S.$ I know in the city in Puerto Plata the bags are cheaper, but i got tired of being stopped to have my coffee inspected and sniffed. :paranoid:

Remember the blight...... ruined the crop for years to come
Indeed.

The Dominican crop is only about 30% of pre-rust levels. Many producers have moved on to other crops, and large producers are gobbling land from small producers. The gubmint promised relief in the form of rust-resistant plants and gave none.

When the crop is back, there will be fewer producers with expanded holdings.

I usually drink Cafe Bustelo while I'm in the US. It's about as Dominican as the stuff available on the island (unless you get it from the estate producers) and it's only about $5/pound.

“Un reportaje reciente de la agencia EFE destaca que el 92% del café que consumen los dominicanos llega de Vietnam.”

92% of coffee consumed in DR is from Vietnam.

http://www.iica.int/es/prensa/noticias/current-situation-coffee-production-dominican-republic here is the latest status report I could find on the rust situation. note it shows that in some provinces like La Vega that only a little over 20% of coffee plants were affected by rust.

Good find on that data.

Article from October.

2011-2012 740,000 quintals produced

Two years later, only 110,000.

2017-2018 estimated production is 340,000 quintals.

So, not at its lowest production level but less than half the production of 5 years earlier.

Quintal = 100kg (I had to look that up)

Not Santo Domingo, Douwe Egberts, real coffee, not Vietnamese

https://www.eldinero.com.do/24225/el-mercado-dominicano-consume-cafe-importado/

90% is not dominican. That is why it is ....

By the way, we pay 3 € 250 grams here of real coffee, not mixed up with other stuff.

Local coffee in Jarabacoa is 100 percent coffee from the DR. Cost anywhere from 185 to 260 pesos per lb. I can take a trip to Angostura ( near Jarabacoa but higher up) and get it cheaper right off the farm. Monte Alto is pure unmixed Dominican coffee direct from Jarabacoa área. There are several other small local coffee producer that produce and sell a good flavored coffee. you are paying 350 pesos per lb.

Even the coffee quality in Jarabacoa has suffered greatly because of the rust. The Ramirez sopent a small fortune on fungicides on their crops and even their traditional high quality suffered.

Go check out the raw beans in the drying area and you can see what I mean.

That said, I should have 100lbs of 14+ screen beand late next spring, the best from the family plantation...that was hit very hard by the rust, and is now just coming back.

One reason the Dominican production has lagged beyond a plant taking two years to produce, is the gubmint made promises of rust-resistant new plantss of which they never followed through. Smart growers took beans from plants not affected by the rust and did their own germination which is a very expensive process.
