Why The DR?

I am often asked this...
Why did you select the DR as a residence... a place to live?

Besides the obvious ease of access from the eastern Coast of NoAmerica,
My other preference was the ‘no minimum stay’ required...

No stipulated, mandatory period one must be ‘ in residence ‘

Makes life easy if you become disenchanted with the lifestyle or customs...
Just exit ,.. and you forfeit nothing

The rule - if it is enforced - is you must not be absent more than 6 months.

My other ‘like’ was that this island is big enough to not allow boredom
Like walking form one end to the other before lunch,,, repeat in afternoon

Bermuda for example is a mile wide at its widest point.... 20 long
Other islands are smaller yet

Not for me

Proximity to NA, beauty, diverse topography. warm people, rich history, relatively stable and a great place to start a "retirement" bidniz.

Meeting Alida here was the buttercream icing on a sweet, moist cake.

Nothing to do with the DR itself.

Came on vacation in 1998, wanted to go to Jamaica, which was sold out at that time, travel agency recommended Luperon Beach Resort, never heard of DR before that, booked it, met my first wife, got stuck. Met my second wife and I am still stuck, lol. 20 years in December...

Agreed on all

My list was the ‘non emotional ‘ kind.... objective somewhat.
..practical even?

The love affair is another topic

Good question - Because in hindsight I think Colombia would be a better fit ?

As our 22 year old nephew once said when I asked him why he chose to live in the DR and not with his parents in the USA ... “ Tio , “ freedom “ here I can do what I want “

Had to remind him that “ as long as its legal , productive, consensual...and we are not paying your bills ...live your life” .

Maybe it's a progressive exploratory thing.

The DR was a big move with many unknowns. And now that the DR is *known* the next exploration isn't so intimidating.

Cabarete
I can sit on a beach enjoying a beer every afternoon, watching the tourists who only get the pleasure for a couple of weeks a year - all for a cost of living much lower than where I come from.

I've lived all over the world. The DR is a nice mix.
Life here in Santiago feels a lot like things were back
in New Orleans pre-Katrina but with a much lower cost
of living. Happy Days!

I first came here when I was on a Coast Guard ship in 1970. We got kicked out the second night because the exec. officer came back with a Thompson Machine gun he got negotiating with a soldier (Back then the were all over the place) That didn't go over very well at all with the generals.

But as a tall, young, blue eyed buck, it took me an hour or two to figure out I wanted to live here. (No details)
The best way to do that was work in twin plant manufacturing with PR.

I got a job and ended up in San Pedro where things got REALLY interesting. (No details here either)
I've been working in Free Zones ever since.

If I had it all to do again, there's very little I would change.
