Super Keno Scam Still Alive and Well

I know this game has been talked about before on the board. But, I don't recall recently. In case not, I just want to bring newcomers up to speed, because I've witnessed some vacationers lose big money recently, trying to win playing this game.

The first I saw this game, was at Hotel Melia in Santo Domingo, Dec. 2000. It's ran as an outpost of the mafia by a couple guys, that dress in tuxedo attire, because the game has such low respect that they do everything to give it some air of legitimacy.

Anyway, there is no way you can win a huge jackpot. The scam begins by telling prospective players someone won two or three thousand dollars the night before, or even a larger amount. So, it cannot be substantiated. The scam continues by letting players win $10 or $20 to lure them into making more bets to win a larger sum of money. They give players a long pole and them fish ping pong balls out of a hopper. First, you can be damn sure they are not going to let someone win $5000, $10000 and walk out of the casino. It just does not happen and the player has no idea of what balls are really in the hopper.

In the past year, the Super Keno scam has moved to the Coral Hamaca, ran by the same mafia shills. In October 2001, I watched a British couple lose almost a $1000 and watched the complete loss cause the couple to scream at each other in the casino. This past Saturday night, I watched a German man lose hundreds of cash dollars. Then when he was all tapped out, the Super Keno scam operators induced the guy to use his credit card to continue making more bets.
I had almost forgot about the episode, until leaving the casino after midnight. The Keno operators were all sitting outside the Hamaca entrance and I overheard them talk among themselves, gloating on how they took this German guy for $1300. who tried to go for the big kill in their Keno game. They were laughing at what an "easy mark" this guy had been.

Then I remembered the guy sitting in the casino tapped out, with his head hung in his hands, devistated. Same scene as the married couple last fall. This woman was actually in tears over the money that her husband had lost, trying to win this elusive Super Keno jackpot. True, no one dragged these individuals into the casino. But, the game itself should be outlawed. It's disgraceful too that the Hamaca allows the Super Keno game to operate in it's casino. You would not see a 3rd party operating a sleazy game like this in any U.S. casino. It wouldn't happen.

I feel very sorry for the people you mentioned who lost so much money by this scam. While it is true that they perhaps should have known better, clearly many people do not and are duped into thinking its a game they can actually win. It is a very cruel thing to do to people who have come from far away to visit your country and it is very shortsighted as well. Those same people may have returned to the DR many times as tourists but now will most likely never do so due to their bad memories of being taken and made to feel the fool. Any reputable establishment, casino or hotel, should not be involved in deliberately cheating their guests. I will not stay at a resort that permits this game in their casino and others should do likewise.
I think that the men who were outside the casino gloating about how they had taken the German man should keep in mind something I have found to be very true in the "game" of life....What goes around comes around.

How do you feel about hotels that...

... Handle food any way that they please and cause their guests to become violently ill? Sometimes it surprises one how low these places can go.

On DR1, we permanently warn visitors of the risks when playing this game.

See http://dr1.com/travel/expect/casinos.shtml
The warning is a good idea- too bad it's not in the hotel where it would really help people- the only reason i saw your warning is because i was already conned and was posting a bad reveiw! something really needs to be done about this- it is against all humanity to take peoples life savings in this manner- if you think of anything else please let me know- ty

To Anyone who has been conned at the HAMACA

Please visit my website about the Hamaca Coral Hotel and casino in the Dominican Republic- www.expage.com/hamaca
I have decided to make this my mission- after seeing 2 guys lose a total of $19,000 and hearing about all the other losses people have endured, i will not stop until something is done. Taking money from people in this manner makes me sick.

I recommend against clicking that link. I can't say it's dangerous, but my computer didn't like it one bit. Major popup hijacking.

How Does a Professional Gambler Lose at Keno?

Your site says you lost $700 at Keno. I know professional gamblers and none of them play Keno even in Vegas because it has a terrible house advantage, maybe the worst of any casino game, and is at best like the lotto. And why didn't you tell the "other Canadian guys" to stop before they lost a total of $19,000? Your site should really say, anywhere in the world, don't play Keno - it's a suckers game for bingo fans.

I know Boca Chica well and while I avoid the Hamaca as any other AI, this is a first I have heard of three people being taken for $20,000 at Keno or anything else.

NB: If you want to tell people not to attend you should point out it isn't in "Santa Damingo" but in Boca Chica, which is 40 Km away from Santo Domingo.

Never Play Keno

I would never play this game ever and I go gambling 1-2 times a month in Michigan, small stakes only. People that go gambling and get caught up in the moment and/or playing to try to recoup losses shouldn't be gambling. Keno is one of the top two games with worst odds. I am not fond of the Hamaca casino but in BC it is the only casino there. Warning someone about scams, odds great for the house, ie Keno, etc is something I would on a judgement basis. I have seen similar situations where people are in tears, yelling, etc and you feel empathy but that is lure of gambling, trying to win big, etc. Interfering with gambling operations, or undue influence on another gambler while inside the casino while someone is playing, in the US, can get you banned from a Casino and lord knows what would happen in the DR.

People should stick with what they are familiar with and I am a small stakes gambler who has a set limit to lose and I only play in Poker tournaments a few times a year, black jack, slots, and video poker only. It is good warning by Kingofdice for others, though I assumed everyone knew that game is not good but for new/rare occasion gamblers, stick to what you know or just play video poker/quarter slots and on a very bad night will probably only lose about 75-200US. NEVER PLAY KENO and a hotel promoting that game will not get favorable reviews online and bring back a lot of repeat customers because the person will be mad feeling taken advantage of, why would they want to go back there? I say get rid of Keno all together, or just leave it at Casinos only, not the hotel with a casino combination because they are just trying to scam hard working people, gullible tourists, who saved their money to take a vacation and are trying to have an enjoyable time. What a way to end a vacation.

Super Keno

We were in Playa Dorada last month, and saw this game (with the balls being fished out of the bin with a long pole) in 2 of the casinos there (I think there are 3 casinos in total). I'm thankful I saw the warning on this site.
The ploy they use is to give you a free $5.00 chip to get you started.
