5th Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) opens at Casa de Campo
Pete Dye’s legendary Teeth of the Dog this week to receive the best emerging golfers from 30 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean from 17 to 20 January 2018. Ranked 26th in the world, and No. 1 in the Caribbean, Teeth of the Dog Golf Course brings water, sea, rocks, and into play. To hold or ride the wind at Teeth of the Dog, that is the question at this bucket list golf course.

It is the second time the event is held at Casa de Campo. The first time was in 2016. The stakes are high. The winner gets a guaranteed invitation to compete at the Master Tournament, extension for the Amateur Championship organized by The R&A.

Founded by the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA, the LAAC was established to further develop amateur golf in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The golfers are coming from Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands, US Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paragay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The tournament is played under the Stroke Play format to 72 holes, with a cut for the first 50 players plus ties after the 36 holes.

Cabarete is ready for the 17th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta
The warm waters of Cabarete beach are ready to receive competitors coming for the 17th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta on Puerto Plata’s northern coastal waters. The event is scheduled for 18-20 January 2019. Cabarete is a world recognized terrific venue that provides great accommodations, trusty trade winds, warm waters and lots of fun places to eat and go for onshore activities on the north coast for the competitors and their family.

As a result some of the world’s fastest Laser sailors come on down to Puerto Plata for the traditional high quality competition.

The event is organized by laser competitor Ari Barshi, who runs the Carib Wind Cabarete Laser training center. The event has grown to where it is now a World Sailing grade II ranking event. For the January 2019, Barshi says that four of the top ten sailors in the world in the category have registered to participate in the regatta.

This year, sailors from Argentina, Canada, the United States, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Holland and the Dominican Republic have registered. 70+ year old Peter Seidenberg of the United States will be racing in the event for his 16th time.

During the competition, nine races of around 45 minutes long are scheduled.

Cabarete beach clean up
Given the increasing concern about the rising level of seaweed accumulating on Cabarete beach on the north coast, local businesses, supported by the Ministry of Tourism have undertaken a major clean-up operation. The Association of Businesses in Cabarete, lead by Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, took on cleaning the beach. Heavy equipment was hired to clear up the sargassum algae. The clean up is in time for the 17th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta.

Ocean El Faro opens in Uvero Alto
The biggest spree of hotel construction in the Punta Cana area is happening to its northern stretch – Macao, Uvero Alto and Miches beach areas. Just recently H10 opened its new all-inclusive Ocean El Faro. The hotel gets its name from its signature lighthouse. Entertainment facilities at the hotel include a bowling alley.

The 618-room resort will be followed by a second H10 property, the 293-room adults-only, El Beso. Uvero Alto was home to the country’s first Adults Only hotel, the Excellence many years back. Now adults-only hotels are common in the Punta Cana Beach area.

Il Divo booked for Hard Rock Punta Cana
Tickets are for sale for the Saturday, 23 February 2019 concert by the opera-pop quartet Il Divo at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. The performance is part of the Timeless 15th Anniversary Tour 2019 and will be at the Salon Filmore of the Macao Beach resort.

Il Divo is composed of four singers, three of whom are classically trained, from four different countries: German-born Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, two classically trained tenors Swiss Urs Bühler and American David Miller, and French pop singer-songwriter Sébastien Izambard.

Il Divo is known for their hits “Regresa a Mi” (Unbreak My Heart), “The Time Of Our Lives” (“The Official Song of the 2006 FIFA World Cup),” “I Believe In You” (Je crois en toi) a duet with Celine Dion, and now their latest album “Hola” (Hello) version of the worldwide success of the singer Adele. The quartet has sold over 30 million records, 50 No.1, 160 gold and platinum records in more than 33 countries.

Dominican Republic is top destination for Ukranian tourists
The Dominican Republic is mentioned first among the top “popular exotic country” destination for Ukranian tourists over the Christmas holidays, according to Ukrinform. Other exotic destinations are Thailand, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. The preferred ski resort destinations for Ukrainians are Austria, Finland and Turkey.

The most popular destinations for Ukrainians traveling abroad for the holidays were Egypt, Poland and Slovakia, according to the director of the Ukraine Tourism Development Center Volodymyr Tsaruk told this to an Ukrinform correspondent.

There are direct flights from Kiev, Ukraine (KBP-Borispol International) to the Punta Cana International Airport, entry point to sun and leisure vacations in the Punta Cana area of the east coast of the Dominican Republic.
