"I’ve been covering the Caribbean for years, yet Santo Domingo—the capital of the Dominican Republic and home to some 2.6 million people—was entirely new to me."

She really qualified herself with that one.

I used to hang out in Colonial zone, but drifted away when it became gay bar heavy.

I'm not referring to the tasteful gay businesses, but the dark, dirty, blasting techno 'slippery floor in the bathroom' type places. (OK, with the exception of Cha.. Rest in peace Cha - Had tons of fun in that place)

Hmmm....I wonder how Mr. LU is doing?

I think most of the dingy places are long gone. I've heard there's quite a few now that are great night spots.

Anyway, getting back to SD in general the changes this city has gone through in the last 10 years are something to behold..

In Paris, people would ask me where I was from, and their reaction was always something like: "Punta Caana!".
I'm glad they are thinking of promoting Santo Domingo.
I have always loved the Colonial zone. Love Santo Domingo too. Although, it was not love at first sight.
