It’s time for Master of the Ocean 2019
The nation’s best surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers and stand up paddleboarders (SUP) will compete against internationally renowned aquatic athletes in Cabarete at the Master of the Ocean 2019 competition. The event is set for 23 to 28 February 2019. Coinciding with the competition are the 27 February celebrations, commemorating the 175th independence of the Dominican Republic.
Some 60 athletes from all around the world are registered for the 15th edition running of this water sport superpower event. Competitions will be held at the beaches of Playa Encuentro and Bozo Beach in Cabarete.
Event organizers Marcus Bohm and Patricia Hiraldo say that competitors from the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Estonia and Barbados will be in attendance. Hawaiian Zane Kekoa Pardue Schweitzer, and German sailor Christopher Bünger “Christopher del Mar” (Sudkap Surfing in Westerland) will be present for the event.
The Master of the Ocean 2019 competition is being sponsored by the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism.

Airport access roads being upgraded
Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), the operator of Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) announced improvements to the airport’s access roads, including the Ruta 66. The proposed work also includes the parking access road. The efforts will continue into the first week of March, from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Some of the work will take place during the night time hours to reduce the impact on traffic. These improvements are expected to offer airport users a better experience.

Amber Cove in Puerto Plata will be one of the stops for the Virgin Voyage's new 'adults-only' cruise. Bookings are being accepted for the inaugural season of the cruise ship commissioned by billionaire Richard Branson that is set to sail in April 2020. The Scarlet Lady adults-only cruise has capacity for 2,750 passengers and will sail from Miami to the Caribbean. So far, the four- and five-night itineraries will include stops in Havana, Cuba; Costa Maya, Mexico and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
The Scarlet Lady’s 5-day “Dominican Daze” itinerary visits Havana (overnight) and Puerto Plata (Amber Cove, Dominican Republic). The company says it will be offering their passengers shore excursions that will include trekking, surfing and shopping.
Onboard highlights will include 20-plus eateries and free group fitness classes to help work off the food.

The president of the Dominican Association of Restaurants (Aderes) Rafael Cabrera says that the increase in cruise ship arrivals has meant a difference for the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, and especially for the restaurant businesses. He estimated that on cruise ship days, there are 2,000 to 3,000 persons patronizing the area businesses, mainly the eateries. “The average tourist spends US$20 to US$40 per person,” he estimated.
Cabrera highlighted that the big plus of the Colonial City is that the tourists can walk back in time history some 500 years in terms of architecture and historical city. He said the tourists enjoy the stops at eateries, many under the stewardship of world class chefs.
“The Dominican gastronomic offerings are very diverse and when you compare it to that those of other countries, you can see that our cuisine is very popular and that in the Dominican Republic it is possible to eat very well," said Cabrera.
He says the greatest challenge for the Dominican Association of Restaurants and the business of the Colonial City in general is to continue developing the area as a prime tourist attraction of the city of Santo Domingo.
