From El ABC:

Danilo has signed a law with a complete ban prohibiting the commercial and private use of Hookahs. ( I think this is the third or fourth time) No hookahs allowed anywhere, not even in homes.

I find it amusing bar owners say Hookahs are their principle source of income and now they will have to fire employees.

Vaping should be next.

I don't see the point of Hookahs - sit around with a lump of charcoal on top of whatever crap tobacco you are smoking so you end up with emphysema like ever Saudi I saw who smoked in the bazaars and souq-walks in the Eastern province ?

Some people may think they look cool - but it is a childish throw back to an outdated culture

The local daily news sites report kids dying from a night of excessive consumption every week or so. You can also find lots of videos of young folks sucking the living daylights out of them to see who can get the largest blast of smoke to blow out.

Ignorance is bliss.

I believe it's a big problem and hope they finally crack down. Start confiscating and stop imports.

"How to prevent the use of hookah in our young Dominicans."

...."This instrument has become very fashionable not only in the United States, but also in the Dominican Republic, and is that many young people and even adults have used it as a custom in their lives, especially teenagers who use it as a new form of fun, mostly at parties.
This is how one more form of addiction has arrived, which has caught dozens of teenagers who believe it is neither dangerous nor a health risk. The authorities of our country have prohibited the use of this one, since the Chamber of Deputies approved in first reading the project that prohibits the use of this device, also known as water pipe, in colmadones, bars, discotheques and public places. This initiative was taken by Congressman Aquilino Serrata Uceta, for considering it harmful to Dominican youth. And there have been cases of young Dominicans who have died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest whose deaths are related to the use of it.
Doctor Agustín Montás, a specialist in the area of otorhinolaryngology, says that it can cause problems at the pulmonary level because it contains a quantity of aerosols that are inhaled when it is used; it can even cause kidney problems because they are substances that enter the organism.
For these reasons we must raise awareness and sensitize Dominican society, especially our adolescents, about the harm caused by using hookah and other psychoactive substances, but for this to be possible we need the support of counselors, psychologists, pulmonologists, otorhinolaryngologists and cardiologists, to promote talks and workshops in public and private schools in order to raise awareness among young people of the consequences of using this device, In this sense, psychologists and counselors play an important role because through them the student intervenes, working with parents trying to make them aware of the damage it causes.

One of these is hepatitis, which can be transmitted via secretions, which at the same time puts the student at risk of infectious diseases such as herpes, tuberculosis, and can also cause lung and laryngeal cancer.

Our youth should understand that hookah smoke contains concentrations of toxins such as carbon monoxide, nicotine, tar, and heavy metals, which are somewhat higher than those observed in cigarette smoke. Research states that smoking one hour of hookah is as bad as smoking 100 cigarettes."....

I've been wondering for a long time if/ when they were going to start
enforcing the previous ban(s). There is a store on the corner of Espana
y Del Sol here in Santiago that openly sells that stuff. Seeing how its
so popular among the youth in this country, I think its a good idea.

Banning activities does not work. I can't think of a single instance where a govt dictated ban has resulted the elimination of that activity. Prostitution, prohibition of alcohol, drugs of all kinds, drinking and driving, murder, being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, using a cellphone while driving, persons under the age of xx not legally allowed to do something or other.

In this country they have yet to figure out how to get everyone to wear a motorcycle helmet or stop at red lights even. Ban the use of a hookah, not a chance. If shisha becomes too hard to get, people will adjust accordingly.

Choose - the country's youth smoking shisha or something else...

... another misinformed conclusion often cited by those wishing to curtail behavior. Someone who smokes tobacco doesn't automatically smoke dope so it stands to reason that someone who smokes dope won't necessarily smoke tobacco or use heroin.

The premise of the argument stands, whether tobacco, drugs, or smoking the drapes, "you" cannot not control what people choose to do just by saying, don't do it and/or making it more difficult to do.

It is time for governments everywhere to get out of the moralizing game and just govern. I have no problems with healthcare premiums being higher for those who choose to smoke, do drugs or jump out of airplanes based on the statistical conclusion that these people will need to use the health system more often but if it's alright to off myself jumping out of an airplane it should be ok to slowly off myself using a hookah for 40 years.

Smoking and drinking should be banned before vaping... Well if it was logic... and related to health issues. :ermm:

From Listin Diario about vaping... If for youngsters yes. If for adults, pure stupidity. But hey no big surprise...

"Pide que una vez entre en ejecución haya un monitoreo constante de lo establecido en la ley, porque en otras ocasiones hay disposiciones que buscan ese control, pero no se aplican. Dijo esperar que en el futuro se tomen medidas similares con el cigarrillo electrónico."

I do agree that banning does not work. Legalize, regulate and tax it...

And yet as a Libertarian I respect everyone's right to remove themselves from the gene pool.

It's just so hard...

Shisha is the cool thing to do worldwide, even more so for dominicans ( here and abroad ).

And to stay real, think of all the problems and the cost, caused by alcohol here...... and then think of the problems caused by shisha....... no comparaison what so ever...... i guess we should ban drinking, right ?

and you guys should visit a shisha bar to give it a try, all in all a very enjoyable experience.

I used to do casual hookah smoking a couple years ago when I was younger to be "cool". Luckily got over that quickly. I have a feeling this aurally might be enforced at least in public places (which I have seen already) but the only way to stop it privately is to basically make the tobaccos, coals, hookahs themselves hard to obtain. I don't know if this ban actually includes the sale of these products as well. Vaping I don't care about as much, since it's proven to be a "healthier" alternative to regular smoking and Id rather see actual smokers switching to those. When I did do hookah smoking I purchased one in the US and brought it through SDQ, a $10 bill for the "Security charge" had me through without an issue. Hehe

if it is going to be enforced as often as the helmet law or the running of a red light or the cell phone while driving or drink driving ...it aint going to make a difference

even the cops don't wear helmets on their motorbikes
