Ministry of Tourism recognizes sustainable community projects
The Ministry of Tourism has recognized four north coast rural projects for their community best practices, efficiencies and quality during 2018. The projects are part of a network that receives assistance as part of the nationwide Sustainable Community Tourism Project (PTCS).

The winners this past year are:
"Chocolala", in Altamira, Puerto Plata;
"Experiencia Música Dominicana", a project that focuses on authentic Dominican beats played by a Guananico, Puerto Plata group.
"Jamao Ecotours", in Jamao al Norte, in the northeastern Espaillat province
"Ruta de la Miel", in the northwestern Dajabón province.

The recognitions were announced during the national meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee that oversees the Sustainable Community Tourism Projects.. The projects receive assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the national vocational training institute (Infotep), and the Ministry of Tourism.

Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García, Deputy Tourism Minister for International Cooperation Fausto Fernández and the director of Planning and Projects of the Ministry of Tourism, Maribel Villalona were present to honor the best of the PTCS in 2018.

The sustainable community tourism project assists tourist venues in areas off the beaten path in the northern Cibao region. Projects from Puerto Plata, Santiago de los Caballeros, Espaillat, Montecristi, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Valverde, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, María Trinidad Sánchez, Hermanas Mirabal, Duarte, Sánchez Ramírez and Samaná were considered.

Medina visits Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club
President Danilo Medina was in Playa Grande for the ribbon cutting of the Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club. Also attending was US Ambassador Robin Bernstein. The event marked the reopening of the 18-hole Playa Grande Golf Course.

Playa Grande is located east of Rio San Juan. It is part of a 10 million square meter development by Discovery Land Company of Phoenix, Arizona, and Third Point LLC of New York.

During the speeches at the ribbon cutting, company executives spoke of plans for the US$1 billion investment. It is hoped that Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club is will attract the upper echelons of the world golfing community.

The initial phase includes the golf course and the first set of 45 building lots where 350 units are planned. Restaurants, recreational areas, a spa, a natural ecological reserve of 1,000,000 m2 and a luxury hotel complete the planned project.

Wingo to start BOG-SDQ connection in time for Easter Week
Low cost airline Wingo will be flying from the capital city of Colombia, Bogotá, to the Dominican Republic’s capital city airport, Las Americas International Airport (SDQ). The airline already flies from the Colombian capital city into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), bringing tourists to the Dominican Republic’s prime beach resort hotspot.

The inaugural flight to Santo Domingo is scheduled for Saturday, 13 April 2019, in time for the peak Easter Week holidays.

The flight departs Bogotá El Dorado International Airport at 6:15 am and arrives in Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport at 11:02am. The return flight is scheduled to depart SDQ at 10:02am and arrive to BOG at around 12:46pm.

In April 2019, flights are scheduled for 13, 16, 20, 22, 26 and 29 April.
Wingo is a subsidiary of Panama-based Copa Airlines. The airline focuses on connecting tourist destinations and short-haul flights around the Caribbean.
Wingo tickets are already for sale on the company’s website and at travel agencies.

Punta Cana Cross Country 6k and 12k
Runners take note. On Sunday, 3 March 2019, the Punta Cana Cross Country 6k and 12k events will take place. On Saturday, 2 March a practice run has been scheduled to introduce runners to the Punta Cana heat and help prevent injuries. Runners will be introduced to the actual routes for both the 6k and 12 k races from 3 to 6pm. Race registration costs RD$1,000.

The races kick off from the White Sands Golf Course that is part of the White Sands-Bavaro community on Sunday, 3 March 2019. There will be awards and prizes for the top three finishes in both the overall and master categories.
