Vistas del Pedregal: the first Greg Norman-designed golf course
Vistas del Pedregal Golf & Country Club in northern Santo Domingo is the first to be designed by Greg Norman Design in the Dominican Republic. Norman is the Australian professional golfer and entrepreneur who spent 331 weeks as the world's Number 1 Official World Golf Rankings ranked golfer in the 1980s and 1990s.

The new golf course is located in a mountainous area close to the capital city, surrounded by tropical forests and featuring elevation changes and panoramic views of mountains and ravines.

Norman’s golf designing firm says it aims to develop the natural flow of the topography and to incorporate the native vegetation and natural surroundings into the golf landscape. “The design focuses on a minimal disturbance approach and regeneration of the existing landscape, including the care and enhancement of creeks and streams and rescue of endemic flora with reinsertion back into the microsystems of the project.” Organic products will be used to maintain the course and an automated irrigation system is to be installed, which focuses on optimal water use. Bulk earthworks and Rain Bird irrigation are underway.

Grupo Malespin began construction on the 1.1 million square-meter site in autumn 2018. The 18-hole golf course, learning center and short game complex is expected to be completed in late 2019.

“Vistas del Pedregal is one-of-a-kind in the Dominican Republic, conceived with the purpose of adding value to the traditional concept of social and sports clubs,” said Marcos Malespin, president of Vistas del Pedregal Golf & Country Club. “Greg Norman Golf Course Design is a world-class partner and adds tremendous value to the project – we are thrilled to have Greg and his team onboard.”

The Italian ultramarathoner, Giorgio Calcaterra registered to race in the 100 km 24 hour Dominican race. The three times world champion of the 100 km will be joining other international and national athletes for the mountain challenge.

The Dominican ultra-trail cross country running race is set for Saturday, 9 March 2019. You, too, are invited to participate in the 100km 24 hour “100 km del Caribe Non Stop race sponsored by Propagas.” This mountain race is from Rancho Francisco in San José de Ocoa to the Hotel Altocerro in Constanza.

The 100km del Caribe Non Stop by Propagas is a one stage race that promotes the development and care of nature and its resources. Runners race mostly on dirt roads on altitudes ranging from 394 to 2,490m.

The single stage race starts off with a 5km Family Run. There is also a relay modality that can be run by two competitors. The first runner reaches Las Pirámidas (52 km) and from there, the partner runs the remaining 48 km to Constanza.

The organizers say there are no restrictions on participation and guarantee full safety for the entirety of the run.

Last year, ultra marathon runners, Italians Alice Modigiani and Francesco Gentilucci, Yarah Bobe, from Puerto Rico, and Argentinean Fernando Marino competed. This year they will be joined by Giorgio Calcaterra. The Italian ultramarathoner is regarded as the most successful athlete at the IAU 100 km European Championships.

Race organizer Mariluz Viñas says: "This race goes beyond the quest for a medal. Each of the participants that complete the race will be winning a personal achievement medal.”
