United goes cashless at Dominican airports
To expedite flights, United Airlines airport ticket counters are no longer accepting cash. Only credit and debit cards are being received for ticketing, baggage and onboard charges.

United accepts payment with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Diners Club cards. The move follows a generalized trend in the airline industry and responds to passenger desires for speed, convenience and safety.

Cash payments are still accepted for ticketing and baggage charges at United Airlines offices in Santo Domingo. Baggage payments are only accepted 24 hours before the flight.

United Airlines offices are located at In Tempo – Churchill building on Av. Máximo Henríquez Ureña corner Av. Winston Churchill (open Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm) and Megacentro in eastern Santo Domingo (open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm, and Sundays and holidays from 10am to 6pm).

United Airlines flies from Newark International to Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) and Punta Cana International (PUJ). The airline also serves Chicago International (ORD) from Punta Cana.

Apple Leisure says DR attracts tourists would have traveled to Mexico
Apple Leisure Group CEO Alex Zozaya says that high-end travel from the United States to Mexico is down. He says US visitors are instead opting to spend their vacations in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Costa Rica over Mexico. As reported in Mexico News Daily, and subsequently picked up by Travel Weekly, Zozaya said that he estimates tourism to Mexico is down 20% this year compared with last. Zozaya also blames cuts in Mexican tourism promotion for the decline.

DR is partner country at the Urlaub Freizeit Reisen in southern Germany
The Dominican Republic is the partner country for the Urlaub Freizeit Reisen tourism trade show. The show will take place 20 to 24 March 2019 at the Messe Friedrichshafen fairgrounds in Lake Constance, in southern Germany, near Switzerland. Fair organizers say they offer exhibitors the most affluent audience in Europe. Five international airports serve the region where the fairgrounds are located.

This year the fair is introducing “Grandparent’s Days,” promoting family tourism. The fair also has an extensive area dedicated to camping tourism. The Dominican Republic has lots to offer visitors interested in family reunions and camping.

Petra Cruz, director of the Dominican Tourism Promotion Office for Europe, says visitors to the Dominican stand will get glimpses of exclusive jewelry made in larimar, Dominican art with carnival motifs, folklore dances, bachata and merengue music and gastronomy including tastings of cigars and rum at the 100 square meter Dominican stand.

Cruz made the announcement about the upcoming Urlaub Freizeit Reisen during the 53rd edition of the ITB Berlin tourism trade show, the world’s leading trade show, held 4-8 March 2019. The Dominican Republic participated in ITB Berlin with a 508-square meter two-floor mega stand.
