Software glitch causes metro to slow down
Users of the Santo Domingo Metro had major problems on Monday, 18 March 2019 due to a technological failure on Line 1. Wilson Mejía of the Metro operating office, Opret, explained on the Enfoque Matinal CDN talk show on Channel 37 that the speed of the trains dropped from 60-70 kph to 40 to 45 kph. The service was normalized in the afternoon, but morning commuters suffered up to two-hour delays.

The Metro train slowed down since early in the morning, during peak commuter time. At the Mamá Tingó station, in Villa Mella, the lines of people extended up to half a kilometer. Passengers had to endure delays of more than an hour to board the cars.

The passengers complained they were not told what was happening, that the staff should be trained on how to handle this type of situation. Others were concerned about arriving late for work.

The glitch coincided with the shutdown of the Santo Domingo Skylift over the Ozama River. The skylift was shut down for maintenance works on Saturday, 16 March 2019, with service scheduled to resume on 31 March 2019.

Lucia Medina urges government workers to campaign for Medina’s reelection
Deputy Lucia Medina (San Juan de la Maguana-PLD) harangued government workers to defend their jobs and back the planned reelection of her brother, President Danilo Medina.

In the audio with her statements that went viral on social media, she urged fellow government workers to get to work for the reelection. She said that if reelection is not a go, the party risks there being a second electoral round (when no presidential candidate reaches the minimum 50% + 1 vote) and electoral defeat.

“We will do all possible so that the government of President Danilo Medina continues,” said the legislator who urged government workers to go out and defend their jobs.

She urged government workers to campaign in favor of reelection, despite the latter being banned in the 2015 Constitution that was passed in order to allow President Danilo Medina to run for reelection in 2016.

President Danilo Medina has said he will announce his decision to seek reelection in this month of March 2019.

El Dia quotes political analyst Belarminio Ramírez who says that polls show that Danilo Medina is the only PLD political with the sufficient popularity to win the 2020 election in a first round.

Lucia Medina herself seeks to be the PLD candidate to senator for the province of San Juan de la Maguana. The post is held by Senator Felix Bautista, who served as director of the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency and whom Transparency International has described as one of the top five most corrupt men in the world. Medina says that Bautista won the position thanks to her popularity. She says she has already held the position of president of the Chamber of Deputies and now seeks to advance to the Senate.

Time to check for dengue
Despite the ongoing drought, according to the latest epidemiological report from the Ministry of Public Health, in the last four weeks there have been 338 probable cases of dengue reported of which 262 (78%) are in minors less than 15 years old. No deaths have been reported in the Dominican Republic so far this year.

Nevertheless, the Pan American Health Organization is recommending the country to be especially vigilant. The highest number of cases so far have been reported in Greater Santo Domingo and Barahona, near the border with Haiti.

Overall, PAHO has registered 99,998 cases throughout Latin America with 28 deaths in January and February 2019. PAHO is recommending preventive plans should encompass the review of emergency plans, increase in the checks for areas where there could be standing water, and ensuring medical personnel is adequately trained.

Given the situation, the population is recommended to cover all standing water, change flower water every three days and to seek medical advice as soon as symptoms appear.

Symptoms include muscular pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and a rash. In addition, there is a high fever and intense headache and pain behind the eyes.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carries zika and chikungunya. Normal dengue is not fatal if treated correctly.
