This afternoon there appears to be a lot of smoke just south of El Cortecito...perhaps near the Los Corales area.
Anyone know what is on fire? There has been a lot of smoke for over 30 minutes and it does appear to be some sort of fire.
Anyone know?

The sky to the south of Cortecito is literally BLACK. Thick smoke is apparent. Still no sirens, no indication of any kind of emegency...but that is typical of the D.R.....

Burning cane fields? Pretty typical this time of year...

5 fires a day - since no lightning to cause these, I suppose people are at fault or refracted sunlight through discarded glass.

Yep...that's the source...apparently can't fight it due to the location be unreachable with fire equipment...will have to wait until it starts to burn the golf course at Cabeza de Toro.

3 helicopter units from Central Romana have arrived to try and get it under control. Was VERY impressive to see the smoke when I left work at 4:30. It's located behind Downtown Punta Cana, between them and Laguna de Bavaro. Almost no rain lately has dried up all the brush around there so it'll take a good amount of water to soffocate it. Tourists at nearby hotels are being affected by the smoke but the fire itself is still a safe distance from the Cabeza de Toro hotels.

Aerial pics don't seem that impressive but it is.

Thanks for asking this question. In Cocotal I noticed at night around 1am-6am a strong burning smell that kind of reminds me of burning rubber. I only smelled it at night when I was there.
