The Spanish artist collective known as Boa Mistura has left its mark in Montecristi. In January and February 2019, the artists mixed with the community to redesign the look of the small boats that are used for fishing and transporting tourists.
The project had the backing of the United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Air Europa and Blur Films contributed so that the collaborative project results could be filmed for the documentary Crossroads, carried out by the group. Boa Mistura is composed of five childhood friends who understood that their love of graffiti could be turned into an agent of change. They seek to use their talents to bring joy, attention and color to less known parts of the world. The group sought input and direction from the Montecristi community.

Barahona tourism fair set for 5-7 April
The southwestern province of Barahona is inviting the general public to the III Feria de Turismo y Producción de Barahona at the Universidad Católica de Barahona (Ucateba) this coming 5 to 7 April 2019. The event is organized by the Barahona Tourism & Production Cluster.
Elena Nunziatini, director of the Cluster, says the event opens doors for business and strategic alliances by bringing together suppliers and buyers. It is also held to position the region as a tourism and production center.
The Cluster invited Korea to exhibit as guest country this 2019. Korea will be promoting Dominican travel to that Asian country.
Take the Sea Cloud to Santo Domingo and ride history
Few people know the historic significance behind the Sea Cloud, the luxury windjammer that sails between Europe and Santo Domingo. A voyage this year is scheduled for 24 November 2019, with the ship departing from Las Palmas/Gran Canaria in Spain and arriving to Santo Domingo on 20 December 2019.
There is a shorter version of the same trip that can be booked departing instead from Praia Harbor in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde Islands, on 3 December 2019, with arrival in Santo Domingo on the same 20 December 2019.
Investigative TV journalist Nuria Piera recently shared with her local audience a video of the tall ship made by Alec Corday that tells the ship’s story. The video highlights how the luxury yacht made US history when it became the first US Navy ship to enforce race integration on board. Later, it made history as the playground for Dictator Rafael Trujillo and his infamous son Ramfis, as well as the latter’s close friend, international playboy Porfirio Rubirosa.

The 2019 Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship is taking place this week in Punta Cana at the Corales Golf Course. The event began on 25 March and continues through 31 March 2019. The main venue is the Puntacana Resort & Club in Punta Cana.
Puntacana Resort & Club is hosting the event for second consecutive year. The championship is part of the PGA Tour, the main US professional golf circuit.
Around 132 pros are competing for cash prize of US$3 million and to accumulate points for the FedEx Cup.

Time for recycling at Las Americas International Airport
French airport operator Vinci Airports announced that its subsidiary Aerodom has signed a collaboration agreement with Dominicana Limpia to build a waste recovery center at Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country. The plan is to recover and recycle up to 44% of the 360 tons of non-toxic solid wastes the airport generates every month.
As part of a new waste management program, up to 160t of recyclable waste produced by the terminal and offices at Las Americas Airport will be stored by the recovery center for recycling.
The program includes educating airport users, passengers, employees, and subcontractors to change the mentality about waste reduction and separation, says the company. New bins will be placed throughout the airport.
Mónika Infante, director general of Aerodom, explains that the almost 4 million passengers a year and 8,000 employees generate lots of waste. “We are proud to start this important program that will reduce our carbon footprint and enable us to use resources that today end up in the garbage dumps,” she said.
She announced that a Waste Recovery Center would be built in coming months where the waste materials will be recycled. The Center will feature a vertical garden to be designed by Dominicana Limpia, the entity that is responsible for the technical support and operational logistics for the program.
Vinci Airports director for France, Sweden and the Caribbean, Valérie Vesque-Jeancard, came for the signing of the agreement. For Dominicana Limpia, signing was Domingo Contreras, and Johnny Jones, secretary general of the Dominican Municipal League.
Vinci Airports explained that the recycling effort is an integral part of Vinci Airports’ AirPact environment strategy. The company seeks to obtain and maintain Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) for all airports in its network, as well as reduce Vinci Airports’ energy consumption by 20% between now and 2020. A survey will also be carried out on biodiversity issues for all airports. The other goal is to obtain ISO 14 001 environmental management system certification for all its airports.
