I have had continuing problems with TD Bank logging in.
Various error codes etc....constantly calling them

Today , they sent me to the computer specialist

She said ... Get off the Wi-Fi.... go bare on the phone line

It worked... and I was using a VPN...

So if you have the same/similar issues.... disconnect from Wi-Fi and try it.

Good luck.... life in the islands!!!

Must be a TD thing. I have no issues online with three US banks, even when using a DR IP.

I have no idea why using WiFi versus a wired connection to your modem would cause an issue.

I don't have such a problem and use WiFi with my US banks.

It's one more hop on the network. If that solves the problem, the wifi probably needs to be powered off for 2-3 minutes and powered back on.

I dunno.

If you have a VPN, a ISP subcontractor for internet (who buys from say Claro), an alternative DNS, a repeater or a powerline extender there are numerous other "hops" to any web server. I have all of those with no issues to three banks.

Another issue could be a dynamic IP as all DR ISP provide (you have yo pay much more for a static IP.) Maybe TD prefers a static IP because they can identify who it is, especially from a high-fraud place like the DR. I had a recent issue with a dynamic IP accessing Hulu even with an alternative DNS service, and had to enroll in a service that offers a virtual static IP from a dynamic IP address to solve the problem...and it did.

I suspect in ww's situation the issue resides with TD. Years ago we had a TD account and accessing it from the DR was routinely problematic. Could be some internal security issues.

TD requires a dual sign - in....

Log in & then enter a code sent to your phone....
Very popular this new double security... articles have been written on it.

Canada (ScotiaBank) doesn't have it.
My international bank has a double system -- the little dongle that generates codes when asked.
The Euro countries use the same system

I will say the US has the most lax procedures, I think

Whenever I access my Amazoon account, I have to enter a code emailed to my registered address. MS will send a code via cell phone.

When I changed ISP and added a DNS and static IP service, ebay blocked my account and I had to jump through hoops to re-establish it.

Me too, but I like it like that. Extra security has never bothered me.

I was using my laptop with wifi as well, but since I've been in San Cris with the crappy connection I hardwire. I need all the help I can get.

TD Bank Canada (I no longer have a TD USA account) does have a 2 factor authentication routine when you login to do banking.

1) Your login credentials
2) A code sent by email/SMS to verify your identity.

Some VPN address are blocked outright by TD Canada.
If you attempt to login from frequently changing IP addresses (VPN etc) you can expect the 2nd validation step
If you login from the DR in the morning and then from Upper Volta in the afternoon, expect the 2nd authentication step.
If you routinely delete cookies (which you should) expect the 2nd authentication step.

While better than nothing, SMS as a form of 2FA is not the most secure secure way to go about it.

https://www.howtogeek.com/310418/why-you-shouldnt-use-sms-for-two-factor-authentication/

The USA lags behind most of the world in bank account/card security. Chips on credit/debit cards are still not universally available from some US banks and many merchants still do not have the devices needed to use the chip if a card has one. Same with online security. There is still much room for security improvement when conducting internet banking in both the USA & Canada.

The use of a VPN and secure 2FA is a good idea if available to you.

William, I had a similar issue with one of my US credit unions. The customer service representative informed me that the credit union had a separate site for those logging-in from outside the US. Well, I tried it, and the issue resolved. I think that the issue was the credit union used a third-party website provider, Jack Henry and Associates, and one must log directly into its website when outside the US. Also, another credit union wants to know your location. If you deny it access to your location, it denies you access to the site. LOL. I think that this credit union simply wants to know, in advance, that you are connecting from outside the US for anti-fraud purposes.

Starting to make sense Doc... thx
The tech girl on the phone couldn’t answer why disconnecting the WiFi works but she knew it did.
