Oh boy, this has been going on for a VERY long time. At least 10 years. An American guy used to run the scam at the Hamaca in Boca Chica, and several others have reported it happening on the North Coast. Sad situation.

According the article the guy was playing the game, bet as you go I assume (or winning wink wink), and was told the next bet was $1,200 so he declined. Then they demanded $6,500. If those guards are armed that is as much armed robbery as it is a scam.

Could be the oldest scam on the Island. The operator holds out the winning balls that the person needs. No chance at all to hit the number you need. Out and out swindle...........................

It seems like this is something for police to investigate. We can't have casinos in Dr scamming people. It looks like a crime was committed by the casino.

Interesting.....every Bank account I’ve had has always had a daily ATM withdrawal maximum. Usually about $500 US.

If you read the story, you would find that some of the money had to be wired just for that reason.

6 years ago a buddy of mine had to pay USD$28,000 at the Coral Reef casino in Sosua. Took him 4 days to get all the money together. Casino took his passport and had a security guy follow him around. It was that Keno scam game.

As Sky has already indicated, it's a scam...and a well-documented scam at that. Listen to how the scam works:

OK there has to be more to this story? Why would you play a game you were not familiar with? Really? Casinos are in business to take your money. A sucker is born every minute. PLAYERS BEWARE!!!! Can't be overly sympathetic to these guys and this story. It sounds like they were out of their element and hustled by the employees at the table. You're in a casino in a foreign country where scam is a four letter word. Sad but don't go into a casino in the DR without eyes wide open. Expensive lesson learned.

And who do you think were the first people to be paid off ?
The best thing is to keep spreading the news - DR Casinos are dishonest, rigged and dangerous - just don't go.
There are also some ladies who are professional artisans of the night, waiting to roll you as well

Not being a gambler myself except for an occasional hand of Black Jack and some red/black on a roulette wheel, how does one get into debt? Any of the games I have played require the placement of a bet before the hand is dealt or the marble is sent spinning.

I can't think of a game that will allow the player to play without first coughing up the wager.

When they give you a game that you CANNOT win at they extend credit. This game is a scam and not allowed in most casinos here. In fact I am surprised it is allowed anywhere here.

I agree with you. It’s been going on for so long, and everyone in the business is aware of it, and yet the government doesn’t stop it. Our daughter got roped into this scam over 10 years ago at the Hamaca. We were in DR at the time, and my husband made several calls to DR casino managers he was personal friends with (he worked casinos 1971-2014). Everyone knows, no one can do anything.

I did see a post on Facebook about this particular episode, and a woman (tour operator I think) claimed she actually got her client’s money back.
