Conservation pays off, Damajagua is still lots of fun
Aridio Perdomo of Hoy newspaper reports that the months-long drought affecting the north coast of the Dominican Republic hasn’t dried out the popular north coast waterfall attraction, Los Saltos de Damajagua.” The waterfalls are located about half an hour from Puerto Plata city.

According to Roberto Luis Gómez Santana, administrator of the natural monument, so far this year 52,000 visitors have done the hike up the mountain and down the waterfalls. He said the water level is average and this is keeping the tourists coming. He said visits to the Damajagua Falls have increased by almost 40% between January and April, compared to the same period in 2018.

Thousands of cruise ship tourists take the excursion that takes them to seven or 12 of the waterfall levels.

A public-private alliance manages the natural monument with safety and conservation foremost. Gómez explained that another reason for the adequate water level is that the extraction of gravel and other construction material is not allowed.
