The telecommunications company Viva conducted the first test of the fifth generation network (5G) in the Dominican Republic. The demonstration was carried out with Ericsson, a Swedish company that is a world leader in the development of mobile network infrastructures.

The event, led by the Dominican President, Danilo Medina, and the president of the Media Group Telemicro, Juan Ramón Gómez Díaz, is part of Viva's commitment to the development of telecommunications at the local level, they reported.

The executive president of Viva, Marcos Herrera, clarified that the activity is not to leave the technology in operation, but to make the first live test of this network.

Herrera said that this step gives them the leadership in the implementation of the highest technology. "A transcendental milestone that puts us at the technological forefront, not with announcements or empty promises, but with a real and tangible proof that the future of telecommunications is already here."

For his part, Elie Hanna, regional president of Ericsson, said that this technological leap will open opportunities that it is not yet possible to fully dimension. "Customers will be able to access new applications such as augmented reality and 4K transmission, and industries will benefit from innovative applications of the 'Internet of Things', intelligent transport and remote medical assistance, which creates great opportunities."

During the event, Medina and Gómez Díaz made an exhibition tour, where they had the opportunity to observe the 5G capacities at record speed of up to 26 mbps, this being the highest technology used so far in the country.

In order to really see 5G benefits (gigabit speeds, for example) you would need to install a tower for every street block. Don't take my word for it, investigate. 5G is much hype but you will not see the real 5G features for many many years to come.

And 26 mbps? That's nothing... that's an average 4G speed.

Agree Viva's sites are too sparce to support 5G - they may have it in a couple years in major urban centers but it is a pipe dream to think they will have island wide 5G coverage, ...probably in my lifetime. Densification,..densification...densification

Just a software update - no way. Backhaul must be improved which may require fiber or more bandwidth microwave and new MIMO cell antennas and a lot more Points of Presence and certainly main Switch upgrades.

The ground base cabinets may be 5G physically compatible with the right cards inserted (think swapping a motherboard in your desktop), but simply uploading a software update - no someone is blowing smoke or sprinkling fairy dust to think it is so simple - if so it would have been done.

As far as speed 26mps isn't even 4G, which often hits 1Gbs, while real 5G is projected to be 20Gps

Remember is only a test of the technology, they are not tellng will sell the service tomorrow, arround 2022 is when we could see something closer and in 2 years they can have the missing points, they already have what they need and is the hardware and working with ericsson that will provide also the software for 5G. Its the first step in very long way. In the speach they said by march 2020 they will have whole country covered with the expantion of they network, maybe you did not know but now there is a new rule that help small companies and is that big companies must rent space in their towers to install their transmisors.
