Iberostar adds Coral Lab to their environmental programs
Iberostar hotel chain announced the inauguration of their Coral Lab in Bávaro, Punta Cana. The effort gives continuity to earlier initiatives by the Punta Cana Group in the southern part of the more than 50 km long Punta Cana beach strip.

Coral Lab is part of the Wave of Change movement by Iberostar that is finding ways to eliminate and replace single-use plastics with alternative eco-friendly materials, and promote responsible consumption of seafood and coastal health in general. The chain has 120 hotels worldwide.

Marine biologist Megan Morikawa, who is the corporate head of Iberostar Sustainability Office, said the laboratory is working to combat stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD). The disease was first reported in Florida in 2014 and has spared south affecting 20 species of corals.

Morikawa says that with the lab is sort of an Ark of Noah for the coral reef species. The Coral Lab will house 10 species and 180 individual corals. Built in what was once a yoga beach hut, it operates with scientific rigor and is open to visitors. Children guests at the hotel that participate in the Star camp can visit and learn about the environment.

Morikawa explained that coral reefs are home to a third of the biodiversity of the planet.

John Prine’s “All the Best Fest” at Punta Cana
American country folk singer-songwriter John Prine has announced his ‘All the Best’ Fest with Jason Isbell, and Iris Dement at the Breathless + Now Onyx Resort in Punta Cana. Prine is best known for his humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, as well as serious songs with social commentary.

Writing on the event, Rolling Stone online explains that John Prine’s The Tree of Forgiveness Tour has brought him to sold-out venues like Radio City Music Hall and San Francisco’s Warfield. Now he expects the most significant celebration is to be his own All the Best festival, set for 11-15 November 2019, in Punta Cana.

Prine is inviting his friends to the stage at his first fest. He will perform four times, including collaborative performances with a lineup of fellow Americana giants: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Iris Dement (who famously recorded “In Spite of Ourselves” with Prine), I’m With Her, Amanda Shires’ Awesome Muscular Trio, Paul Thorn, Tyler Childers, Gretchen Peters among others.

Prine explained that the idea for staging his own festival began when he and his wife Fiona took a vacation to the spot where he’s staging it. “It was everything we love about the perfect getaway – easy to get to, perfect weather, great food, warm hospitality and excellent mojitos!!” he writes on the festival website.

Prices for the musical vacation (including hotel rooms at the Breathless + Now Onyx Resorts, food, drinks, etc.) range from US$1,599 to US$8,599. They’re currently on presale.
