Greater Santo Domingo seeks to be named to the Unesco Creative City Network
A delegation from the Ministry of Culture traveled to France to present the candidatures of three Dominican cities for the creative cities network of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Culture Minister Eduardo Selman heads the Dominican delegation. He will be joined in Paris by Dominican ambassador to UNESCO, José Antonio Rodríguez. The sessions will be held from 19 to 23 June 2019.
On 28 May, the Dominican Republic had announced the nomination of three of the country's cities to be part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. The official presentation of the candidatures will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The Ministry of Culture is presenting the candidacies of Greater Santo Domingo (National District, Santo Domingo North, East and West, jointly) for Creative City of Music, southeastern San Pedro de Macoris for Creative City of Gastronomy, and northcentral Salcedo for Creative City of Crafts and Popular Arts.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is an initiative launched in 2004 to strengthen cooperation among cities that have recognized creativity as a strategic factor of sustainable development in economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects.
It covers seven creative fields: crafts and popular arts, digital arts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature and music.

Protect the lobsters, conch and crabs; respect the seasonal ban
Environmental prosecutors seized thousands of pounds of seafood during an operation this week. In the National District alone, reports are that 2,100 lbs of lobster, crab and two Hawksbill Turtle fins were confiscated. A press release from the Attorney General Office reports that eight city restaurants were inspected in the operation.
The Dominican Republic is a signatory of Caribbean seasonal ban on the sale of the species to give the species time to reproduce.

The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill received from the Senate that bans the publishing of pictures of victims of tragic events. The bill seeks to protect the image, intimacy and family honor of the victim. A penalty of 10 minimum wages is set for those found in violation. The bill now passes to the Executive Branch for signing and publication for it to become law.

Blackouts in Santo Domingo
Power outages continue to affect several sectors of Greater Santo Domingo. The clients of the principal power utilities are complaining about the lack of electricity, especially at night and dawn.
According to the Coordinating System of National Interconnected Energy (OC-SENI) on Monday, 17 June at 3:20pm there were 14 generators unavailable, 23 operating partially and 16 available. Those unavailable included Los Mina 5 and 6, Monte Plata Solar and Estrella del Mar 2 CFO. The CESPM 3 generator was not operating after 3pm.
Itabo generators were said to be off the grid due to effects of contamination by sea algae. Units 1 and 2 of the Itabo power plant, which contributes 238 megawatts to the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI), were shut down as preventive measure. As reported, the channels of a cooling water passage to the turbines are affected by the surge in sea algae.
Although at the end of May the general administrator of the Punta Catalina plant, Jaime Aristy Escuder, had announced that the plant would be out of service until the beginning of June to make some adjustments, it still has not returned to providing electricity to the system.
Edeeste has informed that the deficit should decrease from Thursday this week when two of the generators return to service.
The blackouts coincide with intense summer heat, making the situation worse.

Respect the turtles that lay their eggs on Dominican beaches
Local press is urging the population to back reproduction of turtles in the Caribbean. The Caribbean nesting season runs from May to July. The species that nest here are Hawksbill (Carey), Green (Verde), Leatherback (Tinglar) and Loggerhead (Caguama or Cabezona).
Cristiana de la Rosa, in charge of the Program for Restoration of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems at the Ministry of Environment and marine biologist Omar Shamir Reynoso of the National Authority of Maritime Affairs said turtles survival is threatened by human activities. They spoke during the Biennial 9th Conference of Parties to the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles (IAC) that was held 12-14 June 2019 in Santo Domingo.
The presentations focused on how the reproduction of the turtles is threatened by practices such as bycatch, capture, looting of eggs, destruction or alteration of their habitats by urban coastal development and climate change.
Sea turtles lay their eggs on all the coasts of the Dominican Republic. Among beaches known for turtle nesting are La Vacama, Playa Muerta, El Valle, Cosón, Parque Nacional Jaragua, Cabarete, Los Yayales, Manresa, Isla Saona, Isla Catalina, Punta Cana, Guibia, Los Pescadores, Estero Hondo, and Sosua.

Odebrecht files for bankruptcy
Brazilian construction conglomerate Odebrecht S.A. filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday 17 June 2019 in a São Paulo court. The group is seeking to restructure 51 billion reais (US$13 billion) of its overall debt, which allegedly reaches up to 98.5 billion reais (US$25.3 billion), a move that would become Latin America’s largest-ever in-court debt restructuring. The procedure would allow the construction giant to continue operating while granting a six-month period to settle with its creditors.
Founded in 1944 in the northern state of Bahía, Odebrecht, which employed 180,000 people five years ago, faces a string of financial difficulties since the uncovering of the high-profile corruption scheme known as Lava Jato (‘Operation Car Wash’). According to the US Justice Department, between 2004 and 2014, Odebrecht allegedly paid around US$788 million in bribes to governments in Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic and eight other countries to receive state contracts. This includes US$92 million paid mainly to Dominican government officers to expedite contract work for the Brazilian company.

David Ortiz’s condition is upgraded to good
Tiffany Ortiz, the wife of former Major League baseball player David Ortiz, says her husband is making progress towards his recovery from bullet wounds inflicted in Santo Domingo on Sunday, 9 June 2019. Ortiz announced that her husband’s condition has improved to good, according to his doctors. Nevertheless, she said her husband would remain in the Massachusetts General Hospital Intensive Care Unit.
Tiffany Ortiz thanked all of those who have helped, following Ortiz’s recent shooting. She said his health has been reinforced due to the expressions of love that have poured in from around the world, and the support has lifted his spirit tremendously during this difficult time.

US Embassy denies FBI and DEA are investigating David Ortiz case
Listin Diario reports that the United States has not received any formal request from the Dominican authorities to participate in the investigations into the shooting of David Ortiz.
"We would not actively investigate a case in the Dominican Republic without a formal request from the Dominican government," the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic, told Listin Diario reporters.
The US Embassy said they shared information with the Dominican authorities to confirm that one of the suspects is a fugitive of justice from the United States.
The inquiry was about speculation that agents of the FBI and DEA of the United States were participating in the investigations.
"The government of the United States regularly talks with the Dominican government on security issues and exchanges information on a wide range of issues," says the communication sent by the Embassy to the inquiry by Listin Diario.
"Interaction with numerous law enforcement agencies and representatives of foreign governments is a daily activity. In this case, we have shared information with Dominican authorities, including confirmation of a suspect who is a fugitive from US justice," the document states.

Attorney General says will reveal more details on 19 June about David Ortiz’s shooting
Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez has announced that the judiciary will provide all of the information on the shooting of David Ortiz, on Wednesday 19 June 2019. He was speaking following a visit to President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 18 June. He was accompanied by the director of the National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista.
Rodríguez announced that they will be giving new details about the case, and would call a press conference for Wednesday.
Ortiz was shot on the night of Sunday 9 June at the Dial Bar & Lounge in the Av. Venezuela bar and dance area of eastern Santo Domingo.
So far, the authorities have arrested 12 persons. These are Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota (Miguelito) who the case file indicated would have been the person who paid for the murder, and Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, who is said to have fired the shot that injured David Ortiz.
Others arrested are Franklin Junior Merán (Rubirosa); José Eduardo Ciprián Lebrón; Carlos Rafael Alvarez, Lanny Estefanny Pérez Reyes, Joel Rodríguez de la Cruz (Calamardo), Porfirio Ayendi Dechamps Vásquez (Nene), Reynaldo Rodríguez Valenzuela, Oliver Mosés Mirabal, Eddy Vladimir Féliz García (El Nata) and Gabriel Alexander Pérez Vizcaino (Hueso).
The authorities are on the lookout for Luis Alfredo Clase (El Cirujano), Marcos Diaz and Maria Fernanda Villasmil Manzanilla.

Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X wins UK literary award
Dominican writer, Elizabeth Acevedo, has won the Carnegie Medal, the most prestigious award for children’s literature in Great Britain. Acevedo received the prize on Tuesday, 18 June 2019, for her first novel, "The Poet X".
The Carnegie Medal is a British literary award that annually recognizes one outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults. It is conferred upon the author by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). C. S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, was a previous winner.
She told reporters from Listin Diario newspaper that she was very moved as she was the first person of color to win the prize along with being the first Dominican as well.
Acevedo had previously been a winner of a National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, the Michael Printz Award and the Pura Belpré Award.
The book has been a New York Times-bestselling novel-in-verse. It is about an Afro-Latina heroine.

Dominican classic music at the National Theater
Maestro Dante Cucurullo will conduct the Dominican National Symphony Orchestra for a presentation on 27 June 2019 on Dominican classical music. The concert, “Dominican Classics of the 20th Century” is sponsored by the Dominican Petroleum Refinery. The performance will be at 8:30pm at the National Theater.

RD Fashion show set for 23-27 July 2019
The Dominican Republic Fashion Week (RDFW) announces a change in format for its 11th version. The fashion event will be held 23 to 27 July 2019 at the JW Marriott.
The event is being held under the banner of “Fashion for a Purpose.” This year there will be runway shows with people in wheelchairs, street children, seniors, large size models, people with different abilities for the inclusion program. The RDFW is also working with the Attorney General Office and there will be a runway show, “For a Second Chance,” with designs presented by jail inmates.
Designer and businesswoman Melkis Diaz, CEO of the RDFW, stressed: "After 10 years we will continue working hand-in-hand with people and companies that promote the values we have as human beings regardless of ethnicity, social status, physical condition, age, state of vulnerability and all other factors that promote social discrimination.”
Also, the designer stressed: "Fashion is not synonymous with frivolity or product for an exclusive elite, but a creative activity that provides resources to those involved, both in our country and in the big cities of fashion," added Diaz.

Attorney General says will reveal more details on 19 June about David Ortiz’s shooting
Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez has announced that the judiciary will provide all of the information on the shooting of David Ortiz, on Wednesday 19 June 2019. He was speaking following a visit to President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 18 June. He was accompanied by the director of the National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista.
Rodríguez announced that they will be giving new details about the case, and would call a press conference for Wednesday.
Ortiz was shot on the night of Sunday 9 June at the Dial Bar & Lounge in the Av. Venezuela bar and dance area of eastern Santo Domingo.
So far, the authorities have arrested 12 persons. These are Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota (Miguelito) who the case file indicated would have been the person who paid for the murder, and Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, who is said to have fired the shot that injured David Ortiz.
Others arrested are Franklin Junior Merán (Rubirosa); José Eduardo Ciprián Lebrón; Carlos Rafael Alvarez, Lanny Estefanny Pérez Reyes, Joel Rodríguez de la Cruz (Calamardo), Porfirio Ayendi Dechamps Vásquez (Nene), Reynaldo Rodríguez Valenzuela, Oliver Mosés Mirabal, Eddy Vladimir Féliz García (El Nata) and Gabriel Alexander Pérez Vizcaino (Hueso).
The authorities are on the lookout for Luis Alfredo Clase (El Cirujano), Marcos Diaz and Maria Fernanda Villasmil Manzanilla.

Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X wins UK literary award
Dominican writer, Elizabeth Acevedo, has won the Carnegie Medal, the most prestigious award for children’s literature in Great Britain. Acevedo received the prize on Tuesday, 18 June 2019, for her first novel, "The Poet X".
The Carnegie Medal is a British literary award that annually recognizes one outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults. It is conferred upon the author by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). C. S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, was a previous winner.
She told reporters from Listin Diario newspaper that she was very moved as she was the first person of color to win the prize along with being the first Dominican as well.
Acevedo had previously been a winner of a National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, the Michael Printz Award and the Pura Belpré Award.
The book has been a New York Times-bestselling novel-in-verse. It is about an Afro-Latina heroine.

“Chowfan”/ “Love you, Sunday” is the first Dominican-Chinese film. A production by Alhui Dong debuted this week as part of the Belt & Road Film Forum during the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival. Dominican classic music at the National Theater
Maestro Dante Cucurullo will conduct the Dominican National Symphony Orchestra for a presentation on 27 June 2019 on Dominican classical music. The concert, “Dominican Classics of the 20th Century” is sponsored by the Dominican Petroleum Refinery. The performance will be at 8:30pm at the National Theater.

RD Fashion show set for 23-27 July 2019
The Dominican Republic Fashion Week (RDFW) announces a change in format for its 11th version. The fashion event will be held 23 to 27 July 2019 at the JW Marriott.
The event is being held under the banner of “Fashion for a Purpose.” This year there will be runway shows with people in wheelchairs, street children, seniors, large size models, people with different abilities for the inclusion program. The RDFW is also working with the Attorney General Office and there will be a runway show, “For a Second Chance,” with designs presented by jail inmates.
Designer and businesswoman Melkis Diaz, CEO of the RDFW, stressed: "After 10 years we will continue working hand-in-hand with people and companies that promote the values we have as human beings regardless of ethnicity, social status, physical condition, age, state of vulnerability and all other factors that promote social discrimination.”
Also, the designer stressed: "Fashion is not synonymous with frivolity or product for an exclusive elite, but a creative activity that provides resources to those involved, both in our country and in the big cities of fashion," added Diaz.
