An all-inclusive Marriott to open in Punta Cana
Marriott International announced last week that it plans to open a 650-room all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana in 2022. The new resort falls under the Autograph Collection of Marriott.

“Our new all-inclusive resort platform is a natural progression for Marriott International,” said Tony Capuano, Marriott’s executive vice president and global chief development officer.

As reported in a press release on 5 August 2019, Marriott had not seriously competed in that market segment until now. Marriott International, Inc. launches the all-inclusive platform to serve this increasingly popular vacation segment. The lodging, food and other services for a single price model has been a vital element of the Punta Cana destination success.

Marriott wants in. The company says it is responding to consumers’ growing desire around the world for premium, worry-free vacations.

For the Punta Cana all-inclusive, Marriott International is working with DIT Hotels, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. “We are thrilled to be developing an all-inclusive Autograph Collection resort in the Dominican Republic in collaboration with Marriott International,” said Mihail Popov, CEO of DIT Hotels. “Working with Marriott International means we have access to its brand, design and business expertise as we develop our resort in Punta Cana," said Popov. He added: "Once we open, we’ll benefit from the company’s operational excellence and base of enthusiastic Marriott Bonvoy members who are always seeking out new experiences.”

Marriott operates Autograph Collection hotels in Bahamas, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama in the Caribbean and Latin American region.

Long-term parking could cost less than taking an Uber
Long-term parking at Las Americas International Airport is very reasonable. It is now an option for those who travel abroad. Enjoy the convenience of arriving at the airport in your car and then departing in your vehicle.

The parking fees can cost about the same as a low-cost Uber taxi. A 24-hour car stay is RD$700, but a 5-day car stay is RD$1,600. And for those staying more than 7-days, the fee is RD$2,000 for the first seven days and RD$200 per day after that.

Bahía Príncipe bolsters Samaná’s ecotourism strengths
Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts announces the company plans to contribute to enhancing the ecotouristic potential of the northeastern province of Samaná.

“Our strategic proposal responds to the main environmental needs that exist in the area, such as waste management, involving local actors to be the catalysts of change to allow the differentiation and positioning of the destination as a biodiverse, clean and sustainable place,” says Pablo del Toro, head of environmental management at Grupo Piñero, the Bahía Príncipe parent company.

Grupo Piñero is collaborating with the German Development Cooperation, GIZ, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment of the Dominican Republic to implement the biodiversity awareness programs in the hotels and public schools in Samaná.

Flycana signs with Aerodom to use Las Americas as a base
The new low-cost airline, Flycana has signed an agreement with Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) to make Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport (AILA) its operations base. The company is working to finalize its capitalization and recertification processes by year-end to begin flying by early 2020. The company goal is to have a 32-strong jet fleet by 2025.

The company is seeking new investors. Chief executive Frederik Jacobsen says the airline has chosen a US-based investment bank to place Flycana shares worth $80 million with both international and Dominican private and institutional investors.

"Despite launching as an ultra-low-cost airline, we will offer a number of services such as allowing connections between our flights, effectively establishing a hub operation in Santo Domingo," says Jacobsen.

Flycana has identified several US cities with large Dominican expat communities and tourism potential that are underserved and represent clear opportunities.

As reported, the airline founder and president, Victor Pacheco Méndez, is at present the majority shareholder of the airline. Michael Powell, the former financial chief for Wizz Air, and who is the executive chairman for Argentine ultra low-cost carrier Flybondi.

Flycana will be using licenses acquired from Dominican Wings and expects to grow to serve destinations in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
