Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara open in Cap Cana
President Danilo Medina and Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García were in Cap Cana for the opening on Wednesday, 11 December 2019 of the first Hyatts in the Dominican Republic, the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana. President Danilo Medina and the president of Playa Hotels & Resorts, Bruce Wardinsky cut the symbolic inaugural ribbons.

Hyatt Ziva has a large water park and caters to all the family and Hyatt Zilara is an adults-only operation.

Taino Bay expects to be open by November 2020
The Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Port Authority and Puerto Plata Port Investment, winner of the tender for the construction of a second cruise terminal in Puerto Plata, say that by November 2020, they would be receiving the first cruise ship passengers. The new port is going up adjacent to the San Felipe Fortress in the city of Puerto Plata. The port expects to receive 150 cruise ship visits by 2021.

During a press conference, Vice Minister of Tourism Julio Almonte, the director of the Port Authority Victor Gomez Casanova and Mauricio Hamui of Puerto Plata Port Investment and Taino Bay Terminal stressed how the new port would be a multi-purpose port.

Construction began early this year on the Taino Bay project. Gomez Casanova said that already cruise companies are selling the destination for November 2020.

The Taino Bay port would be the second on the north coast catering to cruise ship visits. The first to open was Amber Cove in Maimón Bay, about half an hour away.

World competitors coming for Viva Resorts Regatta
The Viva Resorts Regatta is set for 17-19 January 2020 on Cabarete beach in Puerto Plata. Erika Sordo, marketing director for Viva Wyndham Resorts explained the event is world-class. It is a qualifier for the Summer Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She says it is the only annual regatta recognized in the Caribbean for points on the World Sailing organization ranking.

The competition is the first on the world's calendar of laser sailing regattas and will attract the world's best sailors to the country. More than 30 participants will compete in the one-person Laser class, with teams coming from Argentina, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and, host country, the Dominican Republic.

World champions Peter Seidenberg of the United States and Wolfgang Gerz of Germany have already confirmed their participation. Raúl Aguayo, a 2003 Pan Am Games bronze medal winner in Sunfish class, and silver medalist in Central American Games in (2006, 2010) in laser class, is part of the Dominican Republic team.

The sailors will compete in three different categories: standard men, radial men and women.

World Sailing, the international governing body for sailing, includes the results of this regatta in its world ranking, making it a very prestigious event on the world sailing calendar.

Cabarete is a world-class destination for watersports lovers. It is best known for as an international mecca for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

The Viva Wyndham Tangerine in Cabarete, Puerto Plata is the tournament sponsor and host resort for the event.

Long weekends in 2020
2020 is a peak year for long weekends. Plan vacations with time and take advantage of the extra time to get out and see all the Dominican Republic has to offer.

2020 opens with two long weekends. Wednesday, 1 January is a national holiday. But most people who can already take off the previous Tuesday, 31 December 2019. The next weekend makes for another long weekend because Monday, 6 January celebrates Three Kings Day.

January holidays continue with the holiday dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia falling on a Tuesday. The day is fixed, so expect many who can to take off the previous Monday and turn it into a long weekend. The next national holiday is Duarte Day, on 26 January, but in 2020 it falls on a Sunday.

Thursday, 27 February is Independence Day. That makes the weekend that falls become a long weekend, too. Many will take off Friday, as well.

This year, Good Friday falls on 10 April. Schools are off from Friday, 3 April, so this is the peak domestic vacation time. Life gets back to normal on 6 April. Many businesses close as of Good Friday.

Labor Day this year falls on Friday, 1 May, but the Ministry of Labor says the holiday will be celebrated on Monday, 4 May. This means many will take off as of Friday to enjoy the extended long weekend.

The next national holiday is the Corpus Christi religious holiday that this year will take place on Thursday, 11 June. It is a fixed day and it also creates a long weekend for those who can take off the following Friday.

Restoration Day this year falls on 16 August. The day marks the inauguration of the government elected in the 17 May 2020 general election. It is a holiday, but this year one that will be characterized by all the protocol of the swearing-in of the next President of the Republic.

The Day of Our Lady of Mercedes falls on a Thursday this year, 24 September. The day makes for another long weekend for those who can take off the following Friday.

Constitution Day is the next holiday. It falls on Friday, 6 November. But the Ministry of Labor orders that this year it be celebrated on Monday, 9 November. So, add that to the long list of long weekends for 2020.

Christmas Day in 2020 falls on Friday, 25 December. The peak day for family gatherings in the year is Christmas Eve.

Overall, 2020 may have a record of long weekends.
