All of the Dominicans that I have met, down to little kids are very anti-smoking. And I don't think I have seen many, or any, that I can remember, smoking cigarettes at all.

I think it's kind of interesting, is it just my personal experience or is it really generally true that not many Dominicans smoke?

Better yet, what is the magic secret that caused this anti-smoking sentiment. Kids as young as 7 or 8 have told me about the dangers of smoking. And these were kids in an orphanage. Who is teaching them??

Bugsey34, tired of seeing this: :smoke: on every corner, ready to go back to the smoke-free USA.

What the hell are you talking about? Smoke free USA? Man it seems as if everyone smokes in the US.

I don't see many Dominicans smoking unless they live with an Expat. ALL THE EXPATS SMOKE. Why, I don't know.

Regards

Jazzcom, smoking is so not cool in the USA. In Spain, non-smoking section does not EXIST. Maybe a good deal of Americans smoke, but they do it outside. People smoke INSIDE the cars of the Metro here, man. It can't get any worse. And Italy... don't get me started!

Edited to say: I am in an internet cafe and guess what the guy next to me just did... lit a cigarette!! haha how perfect

Likewise, in Japan, they smoke a lot.
Here in the US, it is becoming more and more undesirable. Many places are changing to all non-smoking, and in some places, it's against the law to smoke in a public place.
Maybe, because it's expensive, Dominicans don't tend to try it. Especially if it means not eating... Just maybe.

Hey Bugsey, have you been to Denmark? Boy, do they smoke! I walked out of restaurants because the thick smog wouldn't let me see.

Most Dominicans think that cigarrettes are disgusting and smelly. I know one or two smokers, not heavy smokers, but even they think it is disgusting. Go figure.

Bugsey, you in the DR now?

Smoking sucks big time and I can't stand it nor would I ever consider going out with a woman that smokes. How uninviting...

Yes, there is no place safe in the DR and how people can be so inconsiderate is beyond me. In the US I can't go anyplace and have a meal at the bar. It's mostly the Europeans and Canadians that make smoking there intolerable.

If I am going to take burning garbage into my system the least it can do is get me high for heavens sake and Tobacco doesn't even do that.:)

I have worked in two places (in the US) where they smoked in the office and it stinks. I don't know if that is legal in the US. Maybe they were breaking the law. Don't know. But I did not stay long there. But yes this a better place for non-smokers than most of Latin America. Recently went to the Jaragua casino and had to get out of there cause it was real bad air.

I think he thought I was in the DR and the guy was smoking next to me Pib... I can't explain the 'no safe place' part though, he's gonna have to get himself out of that one...

But why do you think so many Dominicans think smoking is gross? Just because it's no that popular maybe, so they are not used to it?

I don't know why smoking is so unpopular here, I can only guess that publicity didn't really made it and people never thought of smoking as glamorous. And it stinks, literally.

Smoking

In ther DR there are extremely few "non-smoking" sections in any restrauant.....I know Vesuvio's has one in Sto Dgo...

Santiago, being the tobacco capitol of the DR is smoke-where-you-want. However, most smokers here will try and not bother others. Many houses are very open so smoking is not a problem, except that I find that cigarettes permeate the curains and the furniture. Most people won't smoke in an airconditioned vehicle.

While I tend to dislike Smoke-Nazis, when I lite up one of my cigars-not a daily occurence-I try and respect the air of others.
And I do hate cigarette smoke, isn't that funny?

HB, maybe a cigar today? Hummm have to think on that.

We've had no smoking in public buildings for many years. Then we had non smoking sections in coffee shops and restaurants. Tim Horton's build separate glass enclosed rooms for smoking but we now have no smoking in my area of Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, not sure about London. No smoking in any restaurants, coffee shops. or bars. Bars are the only places not following the rule. I think the inspectors have gotten tired of trying to inforce it in bars. I see smokers in the middle of winter having a cigarrette outside their office or even the coffee shop. If the smoke doesn't kill them the phenomena just might. Or maybe smoking in the fresh air isn't as bad for you. It's been good for me because I'm alergic to smoke. Anyway my two cents on smoking.

In psychological studies it has been found that people who smoke are more likely to have mental disorders than non-smokers.

Thanks for you input, please read the original question and answer. Posts like this are worthless and destructive.

I think you get my point...

Maybe it's a self -fulfilling prophecy. t's not that popular in the first place, so kids don't see parents smoking usually, they are not used to it and therefore don't do it later when they grow up?

Relax Pibster... I was referring to restaurants in the DR and the smoke. Complaining about the SMOKE and EXPATS. I guess I wasn't clear enough in my post?.

quote from my last post...
It's mostly the Europeans and Canadians that make smoking there intolerable.

They all smoke on the North Coast and during dinner with no respect unless you say something. Sorry if you misunderstood.

I don't know of many Dominicans that smoke either, but my husband says there are lots that still do. I don't know how anyone here in Canada can afford to smoke, cigarettes now cost $8+/pckg of 25 cigarettes. Word has it, the government will be taxing cigarettes another $2/pckg in the near future.

Edited to add:

Here is a site where you can compare trends of tobacco consumption/capita for different countries in the world. Looks like the most recent information available for the Dominican Republic is 1997.

Lets not forget the economics of "Smoking"!

The fact is that the vast majority of the population of the dominican republic is poor, and "poorer"! They can not afford the 10,20,or 30 pesos a day it takes to have "The Habit"! When I was a "smoker",there were always lots of dominicans asking for a "smoke". I never knew that they were "smokers". I guess their favorite "brand" was,"OP,s", "Other Peoples"!"CRISCO"

It's true, Criss, that economics plays a part, but everyone always has money for a Presidente...
