Happy Birthday USA

Happy Birthday USA. Yakov Smirnoff, the comedian, Russian immigrant and American Citizen (took oath on 4th of July); in a simple way described it best, "What a Country". Regards, PJT

Friend from the UK sent me this...

Happy Fourth of July

Best wishes for a happy day.

Of course, it won't be entirely happy. Too much has
happened over the past year and the memories will intrude
and remind you of the thousands who died at the whim of one
man and his berserker followers. Of the unreasoning hate
for you and your fellow citizens emanating from Bin Laden
and other Saudis who seek to repay being saved from the
domination of a monstrous tyrant by turning on those who
helped them in their time of need.

You will continue to have to endure the hatred of those who,
while accepting the protection of America, seek to damage it
not because it has done them any harm, not even because it
might have wished them ill, but simply because it is rich
and powerful and they resent that fact.

You will continue to find yourself standing alone against
attempts to humble the mighty USA by using the mechanisms of
international treaties to create new institutions where they
can attack you, abusing the concept of law and justice to
create a forum where individual Americans can be paraded and
humiliated on politically motivated charges. Where there
are no checks and balances, where the prosecutor answers to
nobody.

You will have to endure internal dissension from a minority
composed of those whose arrogance and convoluted logic leads
them to attack their own government. From lawyers who
defend by subterfuge, ignoring the facts and seeking
technicalities which could acquit the guilty. From
minorities who seek to deprive the majority of their beliefs
and rights in the cause of a perverted interpretation of
liberty.

You will have to continue to live in a world where
international institutions give the same weight to major
powers and to tiny island nations which are bought outright
by the enemies of America. You will be voted down and
expelled from bodies which have become the representatives
of those who wish you ill.

You will have to accept the fact that politics and political
power will try to gain advantage by a parody of
reasonableness, by being "helpful" and by delaying essential
legislation under that subterfuge - then accusing the
government of not acting fast enough. Your president will
still have to defend himself against ancient charges of
financial irregularities which ignore the fact that they
have already been done to death and commentators who
proclaim his innocence with a sneer that implies they don't
believe a word of his exoneration.

You will have to grit your teeth when the courts use their
power to dismiss charges, to make prosecution impossible by
demanding full revelation of matters of security and to make
ridiculous rulings at the behest of nutcases. When the
Senate obstructs the appointments of new judges by
procedural devices instead of holding hearings to say yea or
nay. When Congress does what it is best at and does
nothing.

You will need to stay calm when the press screams at the
administration for not revealing every hint of a threat -
then, when it does, accuses it of scaremongering. When it
rakes over the coals of every action to find some pretext,
however contrived, to blame the administration. When it
rails against airport security and at the same time crows in
triumph if it can beat it.

At the same time, you can take comfort from the fact that
all of these represent a tiny proportion - a very vocal one,
to be sure - of the great mass of patriotic Americans who
are not taken in by the posturing and posing but go quietly
along with their support and efforts to help. And the fact
that you have friends and supporters all over the world who
wish you well.

Have a good day - and always remember the old motto - "Nil
Illegitimis Carborundum", dog Latin for "Don't let the
bastards grind you down".
