How about being those little boys who pick up the tennis balls (boleritos) they receive good tips from the players, plus they learn this sport which most of the rich ppl claim to be good at but they suck.

An adult male with european Spanish, with a young 14 year old "friend" and no bells go off?
In Higuey, where there are lots of mechanics and places for an odd job? Packing boys at the supermarkets are free lancers so they don't need "recommendations" ...And a 14 year old should be able to walk the streets and find a job if he needs one. There are also organizations in Higuey, related to different churches, that can orient him.
