I am a university professor and I will be living in Santiago from January through May of 2003. Please advise how I should go about getting the proper tourist card, etc. for that length of stay. Thank you.

Get a tourist card for $10 good for 60 or 90 days (probably 60 days).

Overstay.

When you leave stop at the "I Overstayed My Tourist Card" booth. Which is where exit/passport control is.

Pay the "fine" of , say $10-$20 US if it is even that much.

Leave.

I have a friend in the capital area who just left after 2 years, paid the maximum fine of less than $20, went to NYC for a week and came back and they did not bat an eyelash going or returning.

The fact they actually have a booth just for people who overstayed shows the collecting of the fine is a lot bigger deal than the fact you overstayed. Try this in Australia instead and on day 62 they deport you.
