Yes, Jan there are some dairy farms. Here are some numbers from Oct 99 census of farms done by Secretary of Agriculture in the DR:

Number of cattle:
Raised for meat: 491,800 animals
Raised for milk: 302,379 animals
Dual Purpose (milk & meat) 1,110,222 animals
Total number of cows in DR: 1,904,401 animals

Number of Cattle Farmers (total of all types - they didn't break out milk producers in the data) :
1 to 19 animals: 54,996 people
20 to 99 animals: 10,363 people
100 to 499 animals: 2,880 people
500 or more animals: 417 people

Total number of cattle producers: 68,656 people

Number of cows/farm raised for milk production:
1 to 19 animals: 56,845 cows on this size farm
20 to 99 animals: 68,007 cows on this size farm
100 to 499 animals: 118,951 cows on this size farm
500+ animals: 58,576 cows on this size farm

The #1 region for milk production is the Central zone (comprised of Peravia, San Cristobal, Monte Plata, and Distrito Nacional) with about 28% of production animals.

The #2 region is the Northeast zone (comprised of Duarte, Sanchez Ramirez, Maria Trinidad Sanchez, and Samana) with about 19% of production animals.

Just in case anybody else wants animal information, here are some other tidbits:

The DR has the following populations (as of Oct 99)

Pigs: 538,000 animals
Goats: 163,000 animals
Chickens: 15.2 million birds
Other poultry: 2 million birds
Sheep: 105,000 animals
Rabbits: 55,000 animals
Horses: 180,000 animals
Beehives: 74,000 hives

Another tidbit: the leading import, in terms of $$, into the DR from the EU is NOT motor vehicles, it is milk and milk products.

What info do you really want?

Why do you want this information? It would be easier to give an intelligent reply if I knew your goal. I once worked in the industry, but that was 30 years ago.

I was involved in the dairy industry during the 4 years I lived in the DR. First worked closely with the Dominican Department of Agriculture; specifically with their artificial insemination program. They imported frozen semen from the US (ABS or Select Sires) and intended to use semen from these proven genetically superior bulls to upgrade cow productivity and quality.

Texas A&M University staffers were also present at that time researching methods to increase forage and grain (corn) production to feed these cows. USAID was also involved in this effort.

I later managed a large dairy near San Juan de la Maguana for a period of 2 years. We milked 500 cows 2X or 3X at our peak. There were many herds of 200 or 300 cows; largest I personally knew of milked 800 cows in Duarte province.

I trust that even this old information will have some value. :)
