My wife and myself have just began looking at DR as a vacation destination. We haven't learned a lot as of yet about DR, but are doing some searching and reading to become more educated. I have read much on the beach experience and tourism, but we did have a few questions that maybe someone could help us with...

What is the best time of the year to visit?

What areas/cities in the DR would be advisable for US tourists to stay near and to stay clear of?

What resorts would you recommend we consider and avoid as well?

What are the good casinos to visit?

Is there good night life, such as night clubs, lounges, nice bars? If so, what and where?

What type of music draws crowds (ex. techno, US pop, latin, etc)?

I sincerely thank you all for any help you may be able to give.

The DR is a big country (compared to the other islands of the Caribbean) and there is a great deal to see and do. Furthermore, what is available in one part of the country is not necessarily available in the other. It would be helpful to know more about the sort of activities that you and your wife prefer. For example, if you really like to windsurf, then Cabarete, or one of the resorts in Sosua, would be the place for you. Or, if you would like to be where it is less developed, less hectic, then Samana would be a good choice.

The main activities that you mentioned in your post were night clubs, bars and casinos, etc. Are these sort of activities your primary interest? If not, what other activities are high priorities for you?

With respect to best time to visit, any time is good, but to be here when the most people are, therefore the most activities are available, then the winter season would be best.

Be a liitle more specific if you can. On this board you'll find people who favor the north coast, others the south, and east coast partisans as well. Each zone has its own characteristics.

Having some exciting activities for the evenings are important to us, so yes the types of activities listed above are important, as well as music styles and "hot spots." Thanks again!
