Hi everybody,

We (2 couples with 1 baby) plan to go in DR for one week in october.
We would like to avoid the classic resort trip.
We look more after a kind of cabanas/bungalow/small hotel accomodation type with pool/breakfast (not compulsory) close to conviniences (for the kid).
What would be the best place to stay on the south-east coast?
Any experiences and accomodation references are welcome

Thanks in advance

There's a small hotel in Boca Chica called "Costalunga" (I think) that has kitchenettes...2 bedrooms and a beautiful balcony...for something like US$40 a night...(maybe a little more now)...

My friend stayed there a few months back, and I went to visit...They have a pool, is a few blocks away from the beach...very clean and quiet...

Sound like something you like?

I'm sure Jim could offer a little more info on this subject, right?

If staying in the city is your idea of a vacation, you could plan a visit to the colonial district of Santo Domingo. If you can read a tourist guide and map and like to walk, you can see a lot of history without spending much money.

If you are bringing a 10 month old child please do not take the same plane flight as I do. Nothing worse than having to put up with a screaming, snot-nosed, baby while trapped in a plane for hours. While your at it do not take it to any restaurant or show I might be at also. Better yet! Stay home and take care of your child. You are parent now. Accept responsibility and realize that you guys are not a carefree couple anymore! Accept the fact that when you have a kid your lif is changed! Stay Home!

I think Candil would be more appropriate and peaceful than Costa Lunga. It's right around the corner. Similar ammenities, similar price. Far less traffic (a plus for some, a minus for others).

Do not pay any attention to Tony the Grinch.
Dominicans love children and will go ape taking care of the little one.
Follow Jim's advice on Boca Chica.

Wow...TonyC...and I suppose you were born in a Cabbage Patch?

I never took you for such an angry person...

It's not true that your life changes when you have a baby...unless you let it change you! You are in control of your life, not the baby or anything else...

li974...do not pay any attention to TonyC...

HB is right..."The Grinch" would be a great tag line for you Tony!

By the way...do you have any kids? If so, I feel sorry for them...you must be an ogre around the house!

Excuse me for thinking that when you have a child your life should be dedicated to raising that child! Not having a good time at the child and others expense!
How would you like it if the next time you flew down to the DR I sat behind you and scream at the top of my lungs while I crapped in my pants? They make dogs fly in cages with the baggage why not babies?
If you want to have kids fine by me. That doesn't mean I have to like them or be exposed to them. You want to travel and go out to movies and restaurants? Fine! Hire a babysitter. Can't afford a babysitter? Too Bad! Stay home!
Call me a grinch or whatever you want. I am not theonly one that feels this way. I am just one of the few that is not affraid to admit it!
BTW! I love kids. I just hate your snot-nosed, soiled-Diapered, illmannered, ugly kid!

Life changes after kids? hummm, I'm glad no one told me that. We took them everywhere. Maybe that's why we're all still so close. May Tony be blessed with 4 kids in the next 4 years :)

HB nominated "The Grinch"...I second that motion!!! Anybody else???

Tony...There might be a few kids like the ones you mentioned, but they're definetly the exception...I can tell you I took my kids everywhere with me since they were born...the latest installment was my nephew, Gavin Moon, since he was 5 or 6 months old we took him everywhere also, even to restaurants, sat him in the high chair, and that baby behaved better than most adults I know!!!

And no, I wouldn't want you sitting behind me in ANY flight...you're TOO OLD to do any of that!!!

And cages?...Really...I think you're going a little overboard on that one!!!

crumudgen Robert? I do agree with parts of his take though. Nothing worse than a long plane ride with a 10 month old when their ears hurt from pressure. Happens to me every time I take a long flight unfortunately the times I want to sleep.

I don't find others people kids cute screaming in restaurants or movies especially when I pay a babysitter for my own amusing. If the parents are decent which doesn't normally happen and take the screamers out of the movie or restaurant immediately when they start crying it doesn't bother me as much but the SOB's that don't and thing that they are entitled to ruin my quiet are the problem.

Oh well. Having gone through raising a child you get to learn what is right and wrong but some people never do.

You may also want to look into buying a day pass one day at the nearby Hamaca Hotel (2-3 blocks away). They have everything a child could ever want, all ages. A crisp clean enviornment, manicured lawns and landscaping done professionally, gardens and brick walkways, putt-putt running throughout, staff in colorful uniforms, music, pizza, childrens center with daycare and Baby sittying, playgrounds, kids pools, activities galore, activities center, games, icecream, candy, ...

There are sections that are wonderfully set up for hanging out and enjoying yourself while with a small child and you will have the option to leave your child for 15 minutes or an hour if you want a break.

And the staff... they LOVE children, especially little tiny ones. They will smother attention your child's way. You'll pay perhaps US$30-40 for the pass and that will include unlimited food and drink.

Everything you could need is available there and if you want to take the little one for a dip in the sea, the beach there usually dead calm and starts out just inches deep with clean debris free sand underfoot, gradually reaching perhaps 6-10 feet deep several hundred yards out, where it again starts getting shallower is one approaches the natural reef that acts as a breakwall to the high seas.

Take your child to any restaurant or bar during the day and the chicas will smother attention as well. The usually hand over a complimentary cup of juice or soda if you are eating and/or drinking. They might even ask to hold him/her. Listen for QUE beBEEE mas LIINNNdo/a. Como se llama?
