Having read "In the Time of the Butterflies" (Which truthfully I did not enjoy the "Diary type" reading) and just finished the Before We were Free (I highly recommend this book) , it is rewarding to see Alvarez recive just recognition

    Janice,
You should try Alvarez's collection of interlinked short stories "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents." It reads easily, is a wonderful depiction of how life in the US was for the Dominicans who fleed the DR during the 1960s, and is semi-autobiographical. I highly recommend it.

FWIW Just remember that Ms. Alvarez's contribution to "Hispanic Heritage" was considered in the same league as Ricky Martin's

FYI, Ricky got his award for humanitarian work with kids in India - not for his artistic genius.

Just once, I'd like to meet a man with a sense of humour!
