It was only a co-incidence that Hipolito was shown along side Governer Pataki in today's New York Times. As reported here in the DR1 news yesterday, Hipolito met with the governer to ask support for legalizing illegal immigrants among other items. The NY times article is about Pataki's Democratic challenger Carl McCall responding to stories in the local conservative press about McCall soliciting employment for relatives using official stationery by making counter charges that Pataki made political patronage appointments of campaign contributors and cronies.

The irony of Hipolito's photo illustrating a story about political patronage was not lost on me.

Where the country should be

I don't think it is possible to ever look at politics without a deep sense of cynicism but with this guy (Mejia) it's a little personal. Most people agree that what the Dominican people need goes beyond the bounds of miracles. But, if millions of years of evolution and thousands of years of political experimentation haven't birthed a citizen capable of doing a little more than what the job requires (punctual filibuster) then what chance do the less fortunate (underfed, unsheltered, unguided) civilians have of taking their country forward?
