Interested in some info regarding residency, citizenship and passport if anyone could share their knowledge.

Does residency allow one to acquire a Dominican Republic passport in addition to their US passport?
Or is passports for citizens only?
If so after how long?
What are the appx costs for the whole procedure?

Law 1693 dated 1948 states citizenship can be granted after having resided continually in the country for at least 6 months and having formed a business or purchased real estate.

Does that mean you can spend 6 months in the country as a tourist then buy a condo or house and citizenship will be granted?
This appears the quickest way to get all the benefits if one has intentions of retiring in DR and owning a home.

Any feedback is appreciated.

There is much in the archives on this, since question has been asked a number of times before.

In brief:

1. Residency does not entitle you to having a passport; citizens only.

2. For an expatriate interested only in retiring to the DR, residency is better than citizenship since it is faster, easier and cheaper. Consider citizenship only if it is essential to have a DR passport and/or you want to vote and have the right to run for office.

3. To get residency or citizenship, you will need assistance of an attorney.

4. As you will see in a very recent response to a similar question by the attorney who monitors this section, even after going through the expense and time required to apply for citizenship, there is no guarantee you will be given it. The President deicides on a case by case basis if citizenship will be granted.

Go to the archives and do a search for previous threads on citizenship. Also take a look at residency.
