i like to hang out at the casino at hotel jaragua. i play blackjack. if you follow the basic rules in blackjack you can be there for hours. it's air-conditioned, well-lit, the people are friendly,........make your bets in pesos, the minimum amount, and it's like bingo, takes forever...the gift shop there has american and english newspapers........you get free drinks while your at the table.............go to plaza central, to the movies, they're in english...........going to the bank always takes a couple of hours..........go to the dentist and have your teeth cleaned, 8 bucks US,......good luck,,,,,,,michael lesawyer

If you are the quiet type, go to the Thesaurus bookstore for an afternoon and enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend at the cafe while you are there.

I will be living there. . . .sort of ! I am heading there next friday for a month and then return in December for a month or more. I rent an apartment and know my way around SD pretty well.

Let us know what types of activities you enjoy, so we can give you better ideas. For expats in SD, there aren't any real hangouts, you will find a decent amount of americans etc in Champions Sports Bar in the Juragua. I like hanging out at the Juragua as well, but don't gamble.

I hang out in Champions and like to check out the live Merengue Orchestra as well.

I like the cafes in the zona colonial near the Alcazar de Colon, very pretty, quiet and good to people watch.

I like getting Ice Cold beer at La Ceniza! If with a significant other, I like the open air places on the Malecon that are basically plastic chairs near the sea, with waitress service. can be romantic in a Dominican sort of way.

I will be there next friday and would be glad to show you around one day or night. My novia and I also like going to Boca Chica on the weekend and hang out at Portofinos on the beach. That is an expat hangout, but they can be a whacky group of characters! I can listen to their stories and watch new ones unfold all day!

drop me an email and I'll get you my numbers etc. Or just post more questions!

My husband had his teeth cleened for $250 pesos, then each cavitiy was $200 pesos (he got a discount because he had so many) and a root canal is only $2000 pesos. Not bad huh?!

He went to a dentist that runs an office and a hair salon. She is certified and I found to her be very clean.

I have also gone to a dentist, Dr. O, I'm sure many probably know him, his Italian and his office is on Tiradentes. He charges over $100 USD for a cleaning and other services are pretty up there in price.

Try Coco's in The Zona Colonial It's a nice restaurant run by some English people. Set in a Victorian Colonial atmosphere. They serve English beers and have great food.

Also try Proud Mary's bar, also in the Zona Colonial. It's like a Rock and Roll hang out, type bar.

You might want to go to El Conuco near the Jaragua and Avenida Independencia. It is not an ex pat handout but you will find a very typical Dominican atmosphere. Lots of colour and music. many tourist visit here.
