Some of you know this story. My husband and I went on a missions trip this summer and met a girl named Damalbi who is almost 8. She, like my husband, is deaf. Unlike my husband, she doesn't have hearing aids, because her family cannot afford them. Damalbi is a really neat little girl and we were able to contact a doctor in Georgia who makes trips to the DR. She has agreed to see Damalbi on November 18 and fit her with hearing aids. The doctor does all her work at cost and therefore our goal is very modest--only $260 for this first trip, which includes a hearing test and the receipt of hearing aids programmed to her level of loss.

My church has set up a fund for Damalbi. All money goes to her, none goes to my church. If you are interested in contributing please send to Christian Fellowship Church Missions. In the memo write "PROJECT DAMALBI".
Send to:
CFC Missions
21673 Beaumeade Circle
Ashburn, VA 20147

Thanks in advance, DR1. And thank you to the people from this board who have already contributed in some way.

What about her education? Does she attend a school that meets her needs? There is a Deaf school in POP very close to Luperon where there are many other deaf and hard of hearing children. They even have a vocational school to give them skills that will enable them to be independant adults.

Rosanie, she was told in Luperon that she cannot attend school due to her hearing loss. That is why we would like to start with the hearing aids. We know about the school in POP and if that is what meets her needs then we would like her to move in that direction. We met another deaf student in POP who goes to that school. There she woukd be able to learn a lot. If any one has more detailed info. such as how much does this school cost, it would be appreciated.

Maine Girl: Please remember that this girl has been checked by a specialist and she needs the test to see whether the ear is transmitting anything to the brain or if the auditive centers of the brain are damaged. Until this is done, earphones are not going to do anything. Remember, this is a computerized test, requiring some important equipment. Will this doctor be bringing such equipment? In Spanish the test is is called "Test for Potenciales Evocados Auditivos" , a rough translation of which is: Potential for Auditive Recall. I have requested a meeting with the best specialist in this field to discuss this case, and I will be in touch before November.

HB

P.S. Ask your people about this test...let's see what they have to say...

Thanks, HB, I will. Detailed information is important, and I thank you.
Good news: my missions pastor called me and told me that there has been some money sent in to the account. Ff you know of a need with the girl, in regards to the testing, let me know.
I emailed the doctor in Georgia and will let you know what she says.

Update...

We have over $300 in the account. Will go a long way in pesos.
Bad news: Georgia doctor cannot do the necessary test. Thanks to HB for investigating on the DR side of things.
Good news: father of my best friend's significant other is audiologist that goes to SD every year. Next trip is in April. They can do the test. I am waiting for more info. from them.
HB I Haven't heard from you lately....waiitng with baited breath.
God is good!
If anyone in the country knows of a person with a need for hearing aids/testing, email me! Last year the doctor along with 9 others tested almost 200 people in Santo Domingo.
I'll say it again, God is good!

It is in fact...someone whom I have never met but I have known his son for 5 years (we went to the same school.)
Explain to me how they should know each other? :)

How is your Spanish? I can give you the number and the ext of the doctor, you can talk to her.
My problem is that she has hours that start at 10 am when I start my class.

HB, I teach spanish for a living and have lived in Venezuela...I tend to think it is passable :). Umm...I was an interpreter one year for La Feria Internacional de Valencia and got to interpret for the ambassador of Indonesia. Actually I broadcast his message of goodwill over Radio Latina. Pretty exciting stuff.
Email that info.
And do you know Dr. Fagan? That would be a coincidence....another "Maine" connection.
