Hola all,
I am going to be in Santo Domingo in November, in DR for the first time. I am wondering if you could tell me where a good, cheap hotel is (with estimated rate, please) that is not in a dangerous or out of the way neighborhood. Also, if you had one free day and couldn?t get out of the city (I have other business for the rest of my trip), what would you definitely not miss doing? I?m interested in nature, art, history, etc, just nothing pricey.
Muchisimas gracias!
Rachel

The Colonial Zone is a must, as is the Aquarium. The Aviary at the zoo is good and the Botanical Gardens are beautiful/ And that would be a full day.
You can walk around the Colonial Zone. You can get tours to the Aquarium.
cheap Hotels, do a search in the archives here. You will find plenty..

A good cheap hotel is...

...Hodelpa Caribe Colonial in the colonial zone. On the Malecon Rates can be had for $85.00 and up at V centenario as well as the Melia. Rated start at $104.00 at the Jaragua which includes breakfast. I was just there email me.

Rachel, there are hotels cheaper than those mentioned by Macombrass. Considering your budget, what is the maximum you would like to pay per night? Which are you willing to do without: AC, cable TV, swimming pool?

But first do a search of the archives. This subject has come up often and there is a lot of information on cheap hotels already available. Here are a couple of links that I got from doing a quick search for Hotels in Santo Domingo:
