Hello all, newbie to the boards.

I'm thinking of coming over in January, possibly going to Haiti to document the troubles there. Is the border still open?

I'm also considering looking for a few photo stories in DR, too. Any tips? I like hard-hitting social documentary-style photography and journalism; this is my professional background in London, England.

Many thanks for your time and patience.

I would be interested in anything you found out about this. I will be going to Haiti in March and then wanting to go to the DR for a week. Is it safe to cross at the border or should I fly back to Miami and over?

Any help appreciated.

Mickey - as you are UK based, try the Haiti Support Group in London: they should be able to give you some advice. Their website is

As far as I know crossing the border, though a bit long-winded, is still possible, there are direct buses from Port au Prince to Santo Domingo, like the Dominican Terra Bus company. There are definitely flights between the two capitals. Check the Lonely Planet guide to DR and Haiti.

Hard hitting photo stories about the DR? Just name your theme!

Feel free to PM me for more detailed info.
