I'm going out on a limb here, but I did do an archive search first. Who uses pasolas the most? Would a wealthy person own one for fun? Someone on here called it a "lazy man's bicycle". Is there any status involved?
I ask because I am working on an ad campaign for a project and I had to research an Italian motorbike company. When I saw the beautiful designs of their scooters I searched for a dealer in the DR. But there was none. Is it because there is no need for this type of gorgeous little vehicle (Aprilia's were gorgeous, anyway) or is it just too "low-class" to have a pasola...or what.
Thanks in advance.

In Sosua I see pasolas, but for every pasola I see at least 10 motorcycles.

With a motorcycle you can carry passengers for pay, do deliveries, etc. The use of the pasola is much more limited.

Also that "gorgeous" little vehicle would be way too expensive for most Dominicans.....
Most pasolas are the "poor mans Cadillac"!

Mainegirl,

The problem with Italian "pasolas" is that they are more expensive than the Japanese variety. While I think that Vespas and Aprillias are more stylish, the Japanese bikes are more durable and reliable. The same goes for bigger toys like Kawasakis, Yamahas, Suzukis and Hondas. Italian bikes like Ducatis and Augustas are sexier, but way more expensive and more problematic.

I rarely see a man driving a pasola. I rarely see a woman operating a motorcycle.

A motorcycle requires that one change gears with their feet, and that marks your shoes. It also has a hot exhaust pipe to burn you and is heavy to manipulate. It requires one to straddle to mount it. I've see female passengers sitting side saddle.

A pasola is less powerful, lighter, one doesn't have to straddle, the feet rest freely inside, harder to get burnt, they are easier to manipulate when not started. They generally shift gears automatically so one can operate wearing sandles or open toe shoes.

A "Pasola" is only for the lower class.

A "rich" peson would never own,or ride, one for fun,Teenage boys drive them through traffic following their "death wishes"!They are mostly stolen in the "Barrios"."Golo" has the record for most pasola "Kills" for the entire country.I have only 3,but I am still trying! There are pictures in the archives somewhere of lots of overloaded, and "Strangly" loaded "Bikes" in the DR.Cris CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCc

two stroke motorcycles

are taking the good life out of the DR cities. its unfair! one conco guy terrorises hundreds of people on the sidewalks with exhaust fumes and noise. now multiply the concos by 100 and you have the recipe for hell on that street.
if i were hippo i would rehabilitate my record and demand cleaner, quieter machines from those jap. companias. X.

X-man,

Truimphs are still talked about in bike magazines. I never heard of a norton comando, but the name sure sounds impressive.

They don't make 'em like they used to.

Pasolas lesson

Pasolas are driven by the "jevitos" of the poor barrios, not by men. Most pasola drivers are teens or early 20s. They are able to pick up lots of girls with them, specially if they are new and well painted. Many of them strip them of the body sheet metal to make them look racier and equip them with fat mufflers, aluminum accessories to make them run faster. Some are very fast, but most are slow. I rarely see Italians. Vespa used to be the big name during the Trujillo era. Everyone used to love them, until poor people started buying them as a poor mans car. Then they lost their luster among the rich, as a fun vehicle.

Now rich kids drive four wheelers which cost upwards of $150,000 pesos and fancy racer motorcycles like Ducatis.

But as for snob factor, pasolas dont qualify. It is strictly for the poor. As for bycicles, unless you are a tourist and or a racer and carry fancy gear, youre better off riding a passola. Dominicans dont use bycicles for need or work. Too slow. Trycicles are a poor mans truck.

And Criss, my Guinness Record is bumping three pizza delivery scooters on Lincoln Avenue. I have not yet bumped passolas. I drove over a mans foot who was riding a motorcycle when he left his left foot too far out, but other than that, no motorcycles. If you hit a motoconcho, keep driving.Dont stop. Even if its not your fault, the other motoconchistas will try to catch you and lynch you. Just take out your Glock and start shooting those indians before they get you.

X you got that almost right if you go back a little further to the 50s and 60s and include American iron, you know harleys and indians?
Over the years I have had the pleasure of owning 2 norton comandos 3 triumph bonnevilles a bsa starfire an Indian chief several harleys the least of which (not)being a 1943 wl which has a stick shift and a side car(still have it too in mint shape)Also owned a few Jap bikes(still have 2 honda shadows here soon to be history)and the best mechanical wise but the ugliest bike Ive ever owned an Italian moto guzzi. But honestly British bikes were great easy to customize
and were for serious bikers not wanabe weekend wariors.lol

Juancito Hondaman,

Damn, boss, you know your bikes.

Question:

What do real bikers think of the custom variety like Jesse James and the likes? Celebrity status, maybe?

Harleys

What about Harleys in the DR. Can you get them there or do you have to import them? I've only seen a couple in the DR. I was once driving back from Nagua and a couple of guys on Harleys passed me. Maybe it was because of how rare they are back home or the fine looking girls they had on riding on the back, but somehow they looked way cooler than any one I've seen here in the US.

Jesse James
Celebrity Status? For some wannabes with cash yes for most of his bikes however they are hard working serious bikers who permit themselves a quality well machined piece of artwork that will out perform anything coming out of a factory.Id give my left nut to own a Jesse James,go to his web page and drool..We do have some bikers from Paris doing custom choppers in Samana now havent had a chance to see them yet but soon.
